New Beer Blog Beards Brewery Serendipity Porter

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a beer from Beards Brewery.  It is their Serendipity Porter.  We will get into a little history and then into the beer.  Beards Brewery was founded in 2012 by Ben Slocum and Peter Manthei in Petoskey, Michigan.  Let us get into this porter.

It has a jet black color without a head on this porter. The aroma has a chocolate, coffee, and a slight smokey notes. The taste has a slight creamy chocolate with a smoke to coffee notes on the back end of the tasting experience. The aftertaste has some nice smokey notes. It is not really drinkable. It is one maybe two beers and move on to the next beer.

Here is a description from their website (www.beardsbrewery.com):

Exceptionally smooth with a pronounced chocolatey flavor and balanced sweetness. Subtle notes of cherry and smoke on the finish. Pairs well with desserts featuring peanut butter and chocolate, or a second glass of Serendipity

Ending, there is so many new craft breweries opening and entering the beer market.  I believe it is hard for new craft breweries to do something different than the other breweries.  It is a solid beer. I love it, however, it is not Great Lakes Fitz. I will buy  Great Lakes’ Porter over this porter.  I am not saying it a bad beer.  It is a great beer and they did a great job.  I can get Great Lakes Porter cheaper. I recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!   Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

Here is a description from their website (www.beercamp.sierranevada.com):

STOUT OF THE UNION

Robust Stout

This stout hails from the land of sun, sand, and surf and proves that beach beer doesn’t have to be light colored and delicate. Stout of the Union is rich, roasty and full of deep malt flavor, creating a union of like-minded brewers together through beer.

Closing, I was pretty excited to try this beer.  It is a pretty solid stout.  I like it but it is like every stout. I was hoping to get something special in a limited release beer sampler.  I cannot believe that I paid just over $30.00 for this brew.  I can paid a little less and get about the same stout.  It is worth the try but I am not going out of my way to try it again.  I recommend but I bet you feel the same way.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

In the end, this brewery has been on my radar for a long time.  I know that I had this beer a while ago.  I still do not understand why I did not blog about them.  The beers that I have had from this brewery are pretty solid. I did not realize how long they were making beer.  This is a solid chocolate porter.  This is a nice twist of classic English style porter.  I like it. It is a nice desert beer.  I recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

Here is a desecration from their website (www.funkybuddhabrewery.com):

Let it Snow

Last Snow Coconut & Coffee Porter is an ode to that special time in Florida where the needle dips just south of 75 – even for the briefest of moments. This rich, creamy porter is layered with coconut and freshly-roasted coffee for a taste that recalls a winter wonderland – even if, in our state, that’s just a state of mind.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.funkybuddhabrewery.com

Twitter:  @funkybuddhabrew

Ending, this craft brewery has been on my radar for a while.  I was pretty happy to see my friend came back with some from Florida.  I want to thank my friend Mike for bring these two beers back.  I was really happy to see he brought back this bottle.  It is nice way to get to know this awesome craft brewery.  This beer has a nice balance.  For a craft brewery to have nice weather in winter, they found a way to make a beer for how it is in the north.  Winter sucks here in Michigan.  There is a ton going on in this complex beer.  It is well balance beer.  I love it. This is a really good beer.  I hope they keep making this great beer and I hope I can get more next year.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

In this winter beer blog, we are going to sample another beer from Roak Brewery.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Midwest craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Michigan base craft brewery.  Let us get into this porter.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.roakbrewing.com

Twitter:  @roakbrewing

Closing, I have been saying this again and again about this brewery.  It is all positive thing.  I love how they are doing something different with their seasonal.  I am getting tired of seeing the same old beer styles from different craft breweries.  I was happy to see Roak Brewery doing something different with Porter beer style.  They use Michigan grown maple syrpy and chestnuts.  There is a nice balance and kind of drinkable.  They did a great job on this brew. I like it. I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Enjoy it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Cranker’s Brewery Fifth Voyage Coconut Porter

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into the second beer from Cranker’s Brewery.  If you read my earlier post on their IPA, you know the history of this Michigan craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read it to get to know this upcoming craft brewery.  Let us get into porter.

It has a jet black color with a constant tan head. The aroma has a chocolate to coconut notes. The taste has a slight coconut notes with a dry coconut aftertaste. It is more of a sipping beer, however, I can see people drinking this as a drinkable beer.

Here is a description from their website (www.crankersbrewery.com):

The 5th Voyage is a refreshing and easy drinking Porter meant to be drank in any season. Fresh coconut and chocolate flavors immediately standout, but rich roasted malt quickly takes over for a flavorful finish.

6.3% ABV – 18 IBU

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.crankersbrewery.com

Twitter:  @CrankersBrewery

In the end, is it just me or is it a little weird to have a Michigan craft brewery making a coconut porter?  I guess it is not as weird as it would be about six to seven years ago.  There is not too many coconut porter on the market.  The coconut notes are not overpowering in this porter.  To me, this is a sipping beer.  I am not a fan of this beer. I love Maui Coconut Porter. It is one that I will compare any coconut porter.  I still recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

Thanks to our craft brewing process, when you take a swig of our Edmund Fitzgerald, it will taste smoky, robust, dark, and bittersweet.  Thanks to our environmental efforts, if you take a swig of Lake Erie, it won’t taste smoky, robust, dark, and bittersweet.

Named after the ship that frequently docked in Cleveland and sunk in Lake Superior in 1975, our porter combines a complex, roasty aroma with a bitterweet, chocolate-coffee taste.

In keeping with the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516, this beer is traditionally brewed from all natural ingredients:  barley, hops, yeast, and water.  no chemicals or preservatives are used.

Closing, there is not too many craft breweries out there that has a dark beer as their flagship beer.  Great Lakes Brewery is known for this brew.  It is a nice English style porter and it is one that the craft beer drinkers use to compare to other porters.  This beer is Midwest go to porter and dark beer.  There is some nice tasting notes that will have you coming back to even in the hot summer days.  It is really a sipping beer but some people make it a drinkable beer.  This is one of my favorite English porters. I love it. I wished they did other versions in package. I mean a vanilla bean, cherry, etc versions of the porter.  I know do it in draft but I am talking package.  Speaking of package, I wish this beer was in cans and I pretty stun this brewery does not put any of their beers in cans.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Beer Stores In Southeast Michigan Part 2

In this beer blog, we are going to talk more about the liquor stores in my area and market.  This is a follow-up from a blog that I wrote about year ago.   I just find some of these stores do things that are good or bad and craft or import beer drinkers should know.  I see some stores that are under charging and there are others that are over charging.  Let us get into each of the stores.

Wine palace

If you live in the Livonia or Westland area, you know about this liquor store.  They have a great liquor and wine selection.  I have been told that they have some gems over there too.  We are here to talk about the beer selection.  They have a great craft beer and import selection.  Just like everywhere else, you do need to watch code dates.  If they know you are one of their regulars, you will get some of the one off or limited releases.  They have a great Import selection and a nice beer cave.  Their prices are one of the best in town.  Their prices go pretty well against the Meijer down the street.  Overall, this is a place to check out.

Marcus Market

This place is located in the Wayne State area.  They have an average to below average beer selection. The huge problem with this store is they are not on top of their stuff.  What I mean, they do not know what most of their beer and product cost in their store.  Their prices are pretty high or way too low.  For example, which I have many, Blake’s 6 pack cans for $19.99, which should be around $9.99 and 10.99 like other stores.  Bell’s Planet Series Uranus single bottle (12oz) for $4.99.  While other stores are charges $2.99.  There is some cider and beer that are under cost.  There is a cider from Blakes that other stores charge $24.99.  They were charging $9.99.  They do not have too many rare beers or ciders, however, they have a great Mead selection just watch the prices.  Their little restaurant in the back of the store is a most try.  Asides  that, stay away from this store.

Forrest

This is another place not far from Wayne State either.  Their prices are pretty good.  They are little high but not by much.  They have a pretty good beer selection for craft beers and ciders.  This is a great store when you want some cheap beer with a good craft beer.  They get a ton of rare and limited craft beers and ciders. You will need to ask guys behind the counter. They have a nice staff and they are willing to help their customers.  I highly recommend this store.  If you are in the Wayne State area, come here and not Marcus Market.

Holiday Market Royal Oak

I have been here a few times.  I have not been here in a while.  I just know if I cannot find a beer in my area.  I can take a trip to the east side of the City of Detroit to get it.  They have an awesome craft beer and cider selection. I know many of friends said if you are a regular. You will get some of the one off and limited releases.  If you live on the east side, I highly recommend this place.

Closing, I know there are so many other stores and I know that I keep forgetting some of them.  Please, let me know about them and I will check them out.  I will do a write-up on them.  I hope you learn something from reading this post.  Let me know about your thoughts.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it! \m/

Cheers!
