New Beer Blog Short’s Brew Yosemite Scooter Pale Ale

In this beer, we are going to get into another brew from Short’s Brewing. It is Yosemite Scooter Pale Ale. It has a cloudy golden color with a white constant head. The smell has a heavy citrus notes. The taste has a citrus notes with a dry bitter aftertaste. It is kind of drinkable beer.

Yosemite Scooter is a lighter bodied American Pale Ale with a dirty blonde color and delightful aromas of bright zesty orange, mango, and rich sticky hops. Excellent hop flavors of citrus fruit and berries blast across the palate, along with a mild earthiness. Succeeded by a moderate bitterness, the beer has a lingering fruit, rind-like quality with traces of pine.

Ending, I love my IPA’s and pale ales. I was happy to see this beer in their sampler pack. i have had this beer in the past. I enjoyed them. This beer is not how I remember it. There is not a balance in this beer. For a pale ale, it is not drinkable like the other pale ales on the market. I am not a fan. How many pale ales do you need? This is the question that I need to ask this craft brewery. I would recommend this beer to try at least once. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! Metal it! \m/

New Beer Blog Short’s Twist Of Cain Black Lager

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another beer from Short’s Brewing. It is their Twist Of Cain Black Lager. If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Michigan craft brewery. If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Midwest craft brewery. Let us get into this Black Lager.

It has a jet black color with creamy tan head that disappears over time. The smell has a chocolate to coffee notes. The taste has a chocolate to hints of coffee. The aftertaste has a dry crisp chocolate notes. It is kind of drinkable beer.

Twist of Cain is a pitch black lager with notable aromas of roast, molasses and hints of sweet chocolate. Intense flavors of rich sugary malt and dark fruit resonate with a big coating sweetness. Coupled with a cocoa like bitterness, all of the flavors seem to linger equally and dry the palate.

Closing, everyone knows how I feel about this beer but they have some good beer. They are just far and between. They make way too many seasonals but I see it is by design. They are attacking craft beer drinkers in a way they do their shopping. This beer is one of the good ones. It is smooth but has some nice flavor. It is pretty average but I wish this beer was everyday. Shiner Black is still king for me but I will search this out if I was looking for a Michigan craft. I recommend this beer. Go get some! New Beer Blog Short’s Brew Black Cherry Porter

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another brew from Short’s Brew. It is their Black Cherry Porter. I am a sucker for any with cherries in it. I had to pick up this beer. If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Midwest craft brewery. If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Michigan craft brewery. Let us get into this porter.

It has a jet black color with big bubbles. The head on this beer has a tan color. The smell has a smokey chocolate with a small cherry notes. The taste has a heavy smokey chocolate notes with chocolate cherry aftertaste. It is a sipping beer.

Black Cherry Porter

Black Cherry Porter is made using local Northern Michigan sweet black cherries and eight different malts. The combination of ingredients provides the deep radiant flavor profile and creates a dark opaque color. The beer leaves a slight purple lace from the fruit puree and finishes with flavors of roasted chocolate and pleasurable black cherry.

Black Cherry Porter is one of the oldest beers in our portfolio. It was brewed for the first time on July 29, 2004 as the 35th batch of beer ever brewed at Short’s.

In the end, I am always a sucker for anything with cherries in it. I love cherries and I really do not care who makes the beer. I am going to pick it up on the spot. It was a no brainier to pick up this brew from Short’s Brew. I am not a huge fan of Short’s Brew. I have found some beers that I like from them. It is normally in their seasonal line. They put all their effort behind those beers. It is a nice smokey porter. I cannot get any cherry notes in this porter. I love cherries. I am pretty disappointment. There is a nice balance but I believe this porter overtook the cherries. I would try it once to get it out of your system. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! Metal it! \m/

New Beer Blog Short’s Deacon Blues

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another brew from Short’s Brewery. It is their Deacon Blues. If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Michigan craft brewery. If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Midwest craft brewery. It has a cloudy golden color with a white constant head. The smell has a citrus with Belgian yeast and funky spice notes. The taste has a Belgian spice along a citrus notes. It taste like a Belgian style triple ale. It kind has that old Belgian Ale taste. The aftertaste has a dry malty slight bitter finish. It is drinkable.

Deacon Blues – Short’s Brewing Company Short’s Brewing Company

Deacon Blues is a hazy yellow Extra Pale Ale brewed with bold American hops, but fermented with a Belgian yeast strain. Diverse aromas of pronounced citrus fruit with subtle layers of spiciness, are the first indication of the array of flavors stemming from this light bodied ale. Snappy lemon qualities, along with a fresh ginger-like liveliness, flow appropriately into a grassy bitterness that’s moderately intense, but certainly not overwhelming.

Ending, this brewery makes way too many beers and they need to scale back the amount of different beer styles. I know most of these beers are brewpub only. Their plan is working and State of Michigan beer drinkers are buying it right now. Short’s Brewery knows they do not make good beer. Some of their beer is pretty average but let us face it. Most is pretty below average. They are making a ton of beer to keep their numbers up. I have never saw a brewery make five different Pale Ales for example. This beer and like most of their beers. I am not a fan. This brewery needs to stop making so many different beers and get back to basic. I know this brewery can make some good beer. I just believe they loss their way. Drink it! Enjoy it! New Beer Blog Beer Stores In Southeast Michigan Part 2

In this beer blog, we are going to talk more about the liquor stores in my area and market. This is a follow-up from a blog that I wrote about year ago. I just find some of these stores do things that are good or bad and craft or import beer drinkers should know. I see some stores that are under charging and there are others that are over charging. Let us get into each of the stores.

Wine palace

If you live in the Livonia or Westland area, you know about this liquor store. They have a great liquor and wine selection. I have been told that they have some gems over there too. We are here to talk about the beer selection. They have a great craft beer and import selection. Just like everywhere else, you do need to watch code dates. If they know you are one of their regulars, you will get some of the one off or limited releases. They have a great Import selection and a nice beer cave. Their prices are one of the best in town. Their prices go pretty well against the Meijer down the street. Overall, this is a place to check out.

Marcus Market

This place is located in the Wayne State area. They have an average to below average beer selection. The huge problem with this store is they are not on top of their stuff. What I mean, they do not know what most of their beer and product cost in their store. Their prices are pretty high or way too low. For example, which I have many, Blake’s 6 pack cans for $19.99, which should be around $9.99 and 10.99 like other stores. Bell’s Planet Series Uranus single bottle (12oz) for $4.99. While other stores are charges $2.99. There is some cider and beer that are under cost. There is a cider from Blakes that other stores charge $24.99. They were charging $9.99. They do not have too many rare beers or ciders, however, they have a great Mead selection just watch the prices. Their little restaurant in the back of the store is a most try. Asides that, stay away from this store.

Forrest

This is another place not far from Wayne State either. Their prices are pretty good. They are little high but not by much. They have a pretty good beer selection for craft beers and ciders. This is a great store when you want some cheap beer with a good craft beer. They get a ton of rare and limited craft beers and ciders. You will need to ask guys behind the counter. They have a nice staff and they are willing to help their customers. I highly recommend this store. If you are in the Wayne State area, come here and not Marcus Market.

Holiday Market Royal Oak

I have been here a few times. I have not been here in a while. I just know if I cannot find a beer in my area. I can take a trip to the east side of the City of Detroit to get it. They have an awesome craft beer and cider selection. I know many of friends said if you are a regular. You will get some of the one off and limited releases. If you live on the east side, I highly recommend this place.

New Beer Blog Short’s Brew Thirst Mutilator Munich Helles Style Lager

In this beer blog, we are going to sample the last beer from their Fall Sampler Pack. Short’s Brew made this beer, which is Thirst Mutilator Munich Helles Style Lager. It is a cloudy golden color with a constant white head. There is no aroma to this lager beer style. The taste has a sweet malty notes with crisp aftertaste. It is pretty drinkable beer.

Thirst Mutilator is a light straw-blonde lager with sharp doughy yeast esters that gather atop a perfectly retained head. Closing, I will say it again and again. If you do not make a good lager or pilsner as a brewery, please do not make them. Any style in the lager and pilsner world are hard to make just like sours. Short’s Brewery is like most craft brewery. They make average to below average lagers and pilsners. I have them credit for trying. There is something wrong when you have to add things to hide your faults in your beers. They did not have to in this beer and their alt that reviewed yesterday same thing. I have seem them do it in the past. This is an average beer. I just feel they could drop this beer and focus on their everyday or other beer styles. This is my thought and I know others do enjoy their beers. I like that and they do make some good ones. If you see this one, try it. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! Metal it! \m/

New Beer Blog Short’s Alter Spalter Ale

This German style Alt Ale has a cloudy amber color with a white head. The aroma has no smelling notes. The taste has a slight carbonation with hints of malty notes. The aftertaste is a dry malty finish. It is a pretty drinkable beer.

Closing, I am a huge fan of this beer style. This beer is pretty close to the traditional beer style but I just feel like it is missing something. I do not know what it is. It is pretty boring. It is not like the rest of the Alt beers that I had in the past. I know it is not water because Michigan has one of the best water supply in the world for brewing. I believe it is between the malt and hops. Do not get me wrong, this is a pretty good beer. I know it is missing something. I just feel I could be drinking something else. New Beer Blog Short’s The Magician Dark Red London Style Ale

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another brew from the sampler pack from Short’s Brewing. It is their The Magician Dark Red London Style Ale. It has a cloudy dark red to ruby red color with a nice white head. The aroma has a sweet malty to slight caramel notes. The taste has a very light carbonation with a dry sweet malty notes. The aftertaste has water like malt finish. It is pretty drinkable beer.

The Magician is a lustrous dark-red London Ale with a rich grain bill. The grain combination lends complex notes of toasted caramel, raisins, chocolate, and roasted toffee. Very light hop additions let the true malt characters show throughout this beer.

Closing, I have to say this is one of the better English style red ale from a craft brewery. I am pretty stun. This goes back to the arguments that I had in yesterday’s blog posts on their Dan’s Pink Skirt IPA. This brewery’s seasonal are so much better than their everyday beers. At least, this Michigan craft brewery makes some good beer unlike most craft breweries in this state. I love the balance in this red ale. I am not a huge fan of red and amber ales. New Beer Blog Short’s Brew Dan’s Pink Skirt American India Pale Ale

In this beer blog, we are going to get into yet another IPA from Short’s Brewery. It is Dan’s Pink Skirt American India Pale Ale. It has a cloudy golden to yellow color with a nice foamy white color head on this India Pale Ale. The aroma has a slight citrus notes. The taste has a nice light carbonated notes with some citrus notes. The aftertaste has a dry bitter finish. It is pretty drinkable beer.

Dan’s Pink Skirt is an American IPA brewed with Summit and Simcoe hops. Malt characteristics are mild and practically undetectable in the nose. Dan’s Pink Skirt has pronounced floral and citrus aromas, with a pine resin hop bitterness that attacks the palate.

In the end, how many IPA’s and how many seasonals does a craft brewery really need to pumped out in the market. This is has been the aged old question in the craft brewery. If you make all these beers, is your product still good. I believe you are good at a few things and have to work on other things. It is pretty sad when a seasonal IPA is better than their everyday IPA. This is my thought and I know many would disagree with my thought pattern. I believe this craft brewery makes way too many beers and it makes it tough for them make good beers. I know there is many that would disagree with that thought. I just feel their seasonals are so much better than their everyday beers. I love this IPA and this is their best IPA. There is a nice balance from the hop bittest and malty backbone. They did a great job on this beer. If you can get a bottle, go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! Metal it! \m/

New Beer Blog Short’s Brew Bonafide Legit American IPA

In this beer blog, we are going to get into Bonafide Legit American IPA from Short’s Brewing. This is a special brew because they used Summit hops from Michigan. If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Northwestern Michigan craft brewery. If you have not, please, read them to get ot know this brewery. Let us get into this American IPA.

It has a cloudy golden color in the light with a white constant head. The aroma has an earthy to citrus notes. The taste has a citrus notes with a dry bitter hop finish. It is pretty drinkable beer.

A light bodied American Pale Ale brewed entirely with Northern Michigan grown Summit hops. An excellent sharp aroma of strong floral and fruity characteristics stings the senses with hop laced anticipation. Closing, I love this beer. This is their real IPA. This is so much better than their everyday beer. I have to say there is something that is starting to bother me. I love the fact that their website calls this a pale ale but the packaging says American IPA. So which is it. I starting to wonder if it was a print misprinted but if you look at the IBU’s, it is in the range of being an IPA. I am calling this IPA not a pale ale. In other words, this is a great beer and I am pretty impressed. I highly recommend this beer. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy i! Metal it! \m/
