New Beer Blog Fort Street Brewery Visit

In this beer blog, we are going to get into the second brewery that I visited last weekend with friends. It is Fort Street Brewery. This brewery was started in 2005 in my hometown of Lincoln Park. I grew up there for 18 years. They offer a new Firkin every week. This brewery has been around for 10 years and Congrats to that. Let us get into the beer.

They cover just about every beer style. I did not see a normal IPA or Double IPA. There was a session IPA and it was pretty good. The Lincoln Lager is gone and was replace with a good Cream Ale. There is a nice English Style ESB. This brew was my favorite. They also had a great Imperial Pilsner. Their White Ale was pretty average but I am not a wheat beer fan. I can see beer drinkers liking this brew. Black Hole was another great beer that I loved. They had a Root Beer on tap. It was pretty interesting. It came out as a golden ale and root beer notes were slight. It was not overpowering the brew. Overall, I will make the trip downriver to visit this brewpub again.

I did not order any food but I did look through their menus. It did look good and prices were just right for anyone’s budge. My friend order some food and his food did look good. This is a great place also to watch some sports games. I would say this brewpub is the whole package. Great beer and food while watching some of the local sports teams on TV.

Ending, I have to say that I was pretty impressed. I know I heard mix thoughts on this place. Most of those thoughts were wrong. This brewery is making some good beers. They are making beers that fit their neighborhood. The place is pretty busy with regulars in the area. I love their beers and they have some nice balance from each of the styles. There is a nice selection of beer. I also love environment in this brewpub. I will come back. I recommend this place if you are in the downriver area. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! Metal it! \m/

New Beer Blog Sixpoint 4 Beans

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a special beer release from Sixpoint Brewery. It is their 4 Beans and not 3 Beans. If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this east coast craft brewery. If you have not, please, read them to get to know this New York City Craft Brewery. Let us get into this Imperial Porter.

It has a jet black color with a tan constant head. The aroma has a chocolate to coffee notes. The taste has a smooth chocolate to toffee and notes of coffee. Each sip there is something new. The aftertaste has dry chocolate notes. It is a sipping beer

Closing, I am a huge fan and I am glad that I can get them in the Ohio market. I cannot get them in Michigan market. I am just happy to travel an hour south. I loved their 3 Beans. Why not the 4 Beans? This one step up from the 3 Beans. What I love about this beer is it gives you something new in each sip. I love it. I am a huge fan. Next time, I am down in Ohio. New Beer Blog Farmington Brewery Visit

In this beer blog, I had a chance to stop in to visit Farmington Brewery. Jason Hendricks and Jason Schlaff started to put together plans to open a brewery in downtown Farmington in 2013. Jason Schlaff’s father, who is Gary Schlaff, joined the team. Later on that year, Farmington Brewery finally opened up in 2014 and offer eight different beers. They are offering up to twenty-one and two to three different ciders. The building itself is small but it is perfect for them right now. It has a nice location in downtown Farmington, Michigan. They are right next door to an Irish Bar. It also has a nice outside sitting facing the main street. Customers get to enjoy the nice weather with some good craft beers. It has a nice welcoming inside this brewpub.

They do not service any food, however, you can bring food in or have it order to be delivered. They do not mind and they coverage it. This is a small place so keep that in mind when you go out during prime bar nights. Let us talk about the beer because this is the reason why people would come here. I did like their Pale Ale, Dry Stout, and 4 c’z Slam MI IPA. I love their Mt.Olympus Double IPA, I like the Dry Stout but it is pretty average. The Wheat is below average. I will be back to try some more of their brews.

Closing, overall, I believe this craft brewery is going in right direction. They just need to slow down and take in what they are successful to build on it. Most craft breweries do see their faults and keep doing the same mistakes. I am not saying Farmington Brewery. I am talking in general. Farmington Brewery are working to be successful on everything. I can see them starting to do it after one visit. I had some of their at a beer party and at some of neighborhood craft beer bars. I enjoyed their beers and I will be back to try more. New Beer Blog Shiner Bock

In this beer blog, we are going to sample the flagship from Shiner. It is their Bock. If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Texas base craft brewery. If you have not, please, read them to get to know this American classic craft brewery. Let us get into this bock.

It is not a see through beer. It has a reddish-brown color without a head. The aroma is pretty faded. It is hard to pick up but I believe it is a sweet malty notes. The taste of this medium body has a power of malt but it has some sweet malty notes with hints of nutty notes. The aftertaste has a sweet malty dry finish. It is a drinkable beer.

Handcrafted in this same brewery where it was first made back in 1913, this genty hopped medium brown brew is the pride of Shiner, Texas.

Ending, this is an American classic brew. I do not know anyone that does not like this brew. This brew has everything. It is drinkable and has some flavor. It is not really missing much. I love it. I just wish it was a little bit bigger here in Michigan. I normally go out of my way to get to this beer during football season. I highly recommend this beer. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! New Beer Blog Roak Brewing Visit

In this special beer blog, I had a chance to get by Roak Brewing a few days after their grand opening. They opened just this year but they were founded it in 2014. Let us talk about the beer.

Their goal was to do something different in every beer that they make. If it is higher alcohol level on their Devil Dog Oatmeal Stout, it is same price as rest of their beers in draft to package. It is a huge value. Mean Streets Amber Ale is a hoppy amber ale. They also have a American IPA and session IPA along with Belgian style white ale and Belgian style Dark ale in package and draft. They will have brewpub only beers in the near future.

Closing, they invested a ton of money into brewery and brewpub. They are here to make a stand in the craft beer world. Overall, their beers are really good. I am not a fan of both of their IPA’s. They are pretty weak to me. I can see some craft beer drinkers liking them. I am pretty excited to see what they will come out next. I recommend this brewery. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! New Beer Blog Beer Stores In Southeast Michigan Part 2

In this beer blog, we are going to talk more about the liquor stores in my area and market. This is a follow-up from a blog that I wrote about year ago. I just find some of these stores do things that are good or bad and craft or import beer drinkers should know. I see some stores that are under charging and there are others that are over charging. Let us get into each of the stores.

Wine palace

If you live in the Livonia or Westland area, you know about this liquor store. They have a great liquor and wine selection. I have been told that they have some gems over there too. We are here to talk about the beer selection. They have a great craft beer and import selection. Just like everywhere else, you do need to watch code dates. If they know you are one of their regulars, you will get some of the one off or limited releases. They have a great Import selection and a nice beer cave. Their prices are one of the best in town. Their prices go pretty well against the Meijer down the street. Overall, this is a place to check out.

Marcus Market

This place is located in the Wayne State area. They have an average to below average beer selection. The huge problem with this store is they are not on top of their stuff. What I mean, they do not know what most of their beer and product cost in their store. Their prices are pretty high or way too low. For example, which I have many, Blake’s 6 pack cans for $19.99, which should be around $9.99 and 10.99 like other stores. Bell’s Planet Series Uranus single bottle (12oz) for $4.99. While other stores are charges $2.99. There is some cider and beer that are under cost. There is a cider from Blakes that other stores charge $24.99. They were charging $9.99. They do not have too many rare beers or ciders, however, they have a great Mead selection just watch the prices. Their little restaurant in the back of the store is a most try. Asides that, stay away from this store.

Forrest

This is another place not far from Wayne State either. Their prices are pretty good. They are little high but not by much. They have a pretty good beer selection for craft beers and ciders. This is a great store when you want some cheap beer with a good craft beer. They get a ton of rare and limited craft beers and ciders. You will need to ask guys behind the counter. They have a nice staff and they are willing to help their customers. I highly recommend this store. If you are in the Wayne State area, come here and not Marcus Market.

Holiday Market Royal Oak

I have been here a few times. I have not been here in a while. I just know if I cannot find a beer in my area. I can take a trip to the east side of the City of Detroit to get it. They have an awesome craft beer and cider selection. I know many of friends said if you are a regular. You will get some of the one off and limited releases. If you live on the east side, I highly recommend this place.

New Beer Blog Canton Brew Works

In this special beer blog, we are going to get into a new craft brewery that just open in late April. I am talking about Canton Brew Works in Canton, Michigan. It has the Motor City theme in name, brewpub, and names of their beers. The theme of brewpub taproom is like old factories down in Detroit. The owners are super nice and willing to talk beer and other things with their guests. They do not service food but you can order food from restaurants in the area. They have snacks, water, and of course Faygo. Let us talk about beer.

It is all about the beer. People are not walking in to have peanuts. Their beer range from a light body Pale Ale, which is called Shakedown, to brown stout, which is called Twist ‘n Stout Brown Stout. Their stout has the nice American brown ale but finish like dry American stout. Of course, they have IPA, which is like English style, and Double IPA. Asides their stout, they made amber saison that is called Say Whaaat?!? It reminds me a lot of Milwaukee Brewery Booyah Saison. Arizona Pale Ale is dry hopped with hot peppers. Hot peppers are not overpowering but right amount of heat. They will be making more beer and new beers will be hitting their tap lines.

In closing, I will be back. They are better than some of newer craft breweries that are opening in Michigan. I will say they are better than most craft breweries. They make good beer and they have filled a need between Livonia to Plymouth area. I am excited to see what new beers they will be releasing next. They do flights and sell their beer in tasters. Of course, they will have pints, growlers, and howlers. They do offer a mug club for a 20oz pour for same price as a pint price. I highly recommend this place and if you see me, come by and say hi. New Beer Blog Bell’s Brewery Jupiter The Bringer Of Jollity Brown Ale

In this special beer blog, we are going to get into another brew from the Planet Series from Bell’s Brewery. It is Jupiter The Bringer Of Jollity Brown Ale. If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Michigan craft brewery. If you have not, please, read to get to know this Michigan craft brewery. Let us get into this Imperial Brown Ale.

This special release ale has a nice brown color with a constant off white to slightly tan color head. The aroma has a sweet nutty, malty, and a little to fade alcohol notes. The taste of this fourth release from the planet series has a slight alcohol burn in the front of the pallet with some nice malty and nutty notes in the back part of the tasting experience. The aftertaste has a nutty notes that hangs around for a bit. It is kind of drinkable but it is a nice sipping beer.

Jupiter – The Bringer of Jollity

Closing, I was pretty excited to see this series of beers to hit the market. There has been some really good beers and there are a few bad ones. I should say they are good but did not live up to the price that was being charged. Series of beers like this makes the beer drinker retry their everyday beers. I have to say that I have not revisited any of their everyday beers. I will now get into this brew. This is a great beer. There is not too many really good Imperial Brown Ale. I do not believe there is not too many Imperial Brown Ales period in the market. There is a nice balance that the beer drinker will be sipping or dare he or she to make it a drinkable. I hope they bring it back full-time or a seasonal. They did a great job on it. A ton of flavor and I love the nice nutty notes. I highly recommend this beer. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! New Beer Blog Smuttynose Brewing Old Brown Dog Ale

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a craft brewery, who is Smuttynose Brewing, that finally made it to Michigan beer market. We are going to get into one of their everyday brew, which is Old Brown Dog Ale. If you read my earlier beer blog post on their Winter Ale, you know the history of this Northeast craft brewery. If you have not, please, read it to get to know Smutty. Let us get into this English style brown ale.

It has a clear brown color with a tan color head on this brown ale. The head disappears over time. The aroma has some nutty notes. The taste has a sweet malty to nutty notes with a dry nutty aftertaste. It is pretty slight and crisp for the aftertaste. It is a pretty drinkable beer.

In closing, I am pretty excited to have this craft brewery in the Michigan market finally. I was a pretty big fan of their beers when I lived in the Chicago market. I am still a huge fan if theirs. This craft brewery is no joke. They are growing and looking to keep pushing themselves on their beers and knowledge. This is a classic English style brown ale. It has a beautiful color and appearance. There is some nice nutty aroma. The taste has some nice sweet malty notes that keeps you coming back, however, the aftertaste is pretty crisp unlike most brown ales. This is a well thought and built brew. They did a great job. This is second to Goose Island Nut Brown Ale. I have to say Brooklyn Brown Ale is up there too. I highly recommend this beer. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! Metal it! \m/

New Sports Thought Thursday Blog Super Bowl XLIX

In this Sports Thought Thursday blog, we are going to get into this year’s Super Bowl that is being played at Arizona. Today is the Pro Bowl. Who cares!!! This year’s playoff games has had one theme throughout. Refs have screwed many teams in the league. I am talking about flag that was picked up in the Lions vs Cowboys game. The process of the caught in the Cowboys vs Packers. Finally, deflate footballs in the Colts vs Patriots. I will get into that in a sports thought Thursday blog after the Super Bowl. Let us break this down.

If you read my blog before the playoff games, you know that I picked Seattle vs Denver in a rematch. This is why you never change anything because I did have New England vs Seattle in the Super Bowl. I had that just before I posted it. Oh well! I believe the whole Deflategate will put some pressure on the Pats. I do not care if they have the best coach to get them focus on the game. This does pulls a lot of pressure off the Seahawks. Everyone is talking about New England and Deflategate. The ruling from the league will not be until after the Super Bowl, which I believe is some bull shit. Let us get into what is at stake for each team.

New England Patriots

Winning this game is very important for both teams. New England can shut everyone up on Deflategate and spygate. Plus, this might be last go around with Brady and Bill. I believe the punishment is going to be harsh on New England. I am not going to get into that until after the Super Bowl. This game could make Brady 3 – 3 or 4 – 2 at the Super Bowl.

Seattle Seahawks

This is pretty simple. The best defense of all time is Legion of Boom, if they win this Super Bowl. They took care of Manning in last year’s Super Bowl. They have a chance to take care of another quarterback that was one of the best of his era. This could be their last runs to the Super Bowl. I am not saying last but COULD be their last run to the Super Bowl. There are rumors of Lynch being released or retiring. Plus, they have to pay Russell Wilson. They were able to pay everyone else on team because they had a cheap contract with Wilson. Now, Seahawks will be like all the teams in NFL.

In closing, I can see a close game on the biggest stage and biggest American holiday. I can not see this game being a blow out game. This will come down to the running game because I believe the defense will keep the passing games in check. I also seeing this game coming down to the kickers and punters. Special teams will have a huge impact on both sides of the field on this game. In the end, the Seahawks will win this game and become the first team to go back to back Super Bowl Champs since New England. This will push us into a pretty excited offseason with Deflategate and future of Bill, Tom, and Payton. I am looking forward to the offseason and I cannot wait to sit down next Sunday to watch this game. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! Metal it! \m/
