New Beer Blog Founders Brewing Sumatra Mountain Brown Ale

image

In this beer blog, we are going to sample another beer from Founders Brewing.  It is their Sumatra Mountain Brown Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Michigan base craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Midwest craft brewery.  Let us get into this brown ale.

It has a cloudy dark brown color with a tan constant head. The smell has a heavy coffee notes. The taste profile of this brown ale has a smooth nutty to coffee notes with a smooth slight milky coffee notes aftertaste. It is drinkable and scary because it is a 9% ABV beer.

Here is a description from their website (www.foundersbrewing.com):

Sumatra Mountain Brown

This bold, imperial brown ale gets its body from a team of malts including Caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of Chocolate malt for its deep color and Aromatic and Munich malts to add even more depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. The addition of rich Sumatra coffee takes this perfectly balanced imperial brown ale to a decadent level.I love this beer. I will get more. Best beer from Founders

Closing, I was pretty speechless when trying this beer.  I was really impressed.  I felt like Founder’s Brewery was just staying in their way.  Not really doing anything new and different.  While new and upcoming craft breweries in the state were starting to take from them.  I am glad to see them doing new and different things but take their time putting it out.  There are other breweries that are living on their name and need to step up to the plate.  I am not going to say who they are.  This is a solid coffee brown ale.  This has to be my favorite or close to favorite coffee brown ale.  Great beer with a great price point in a four pack bottle.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

Closing, this beer was part of my last beer of the month that came in the mail.  This brewery has been on my list to try their beers.  This beer has a nice balance and a nice well built design for a brown ale.  It is good but I have had better.  There is something a little weird in the aftertaste and part of the tasting profile.  They made a great beer here.  It is their take a classic beer style.  I recommend this beer. Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

Closing, I am always trying newer beers that hit the market.  I did not know this was a seasonal.  It does make a little sense, since, it is aged in oak barrels.  I know Perrin is trying to make their barrel aged brown ale all the time.  Snow Wizard has a nice balance brown ale.  If it sells well, I would not be surprise to see them making this beer all time.  I like this beer and It is good.  I will say this is not any Perrin Lil’ Griz.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

In this beer blog, we are going to get into third beer from Hideout Brewing.  It is their Strawberry Brown Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their Gangster IPA, you know the history of this Michigan craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Midwest craft brewery.  Let us get into this brown ale.

It has a unclear dark brown color with constant tan head. The aroma has a fresh rip strawberry notes. The taste has a heavy strawberry with a heavy tart aftertaste. It is a sipping beer.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.hideoutbrewing.com

Twitter:  @hideoutbrewing

In the end, I am always looking to see what this craft  brewery is putting on the market.  They keep me looking in their sampler twelve pack of 22oz bottles to see what they put in there.  I was interested to see how their version of Strawberry Brown Ale came out.  It is a sipping beer but others can believe it drinkable. It is different. I am not saying it is the bad or good thing.  I do not know if I like it or not.  I kind of like it.  I am pretty much on the fence.  I recommend it.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Perrin Lil’ Griz

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another brew from Perrin Brewery.  It is their Lil’ Griz.  This hard to find brew in package is being featured on this blog for the first time.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know they history of this up and coming Michigan craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Midwest craft brewery.  Let us get into this American Brown Ale.

It has a dark brown color with a constant tan color head. The aroma has a sweet malty to nutty notes. The taste has a nutty notes with a slight bourbon notes for the aftertaste. It is smooth barrel age brew. It is a pretty drinkable beer.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.perrinbrewing.com

Twitter:  @perrinbrewing

In the end, when I heard Perrin was making an everyday barrel aged ale, I was pretty excited to try it.  I will say many of my beer friends were just as excited.  There is a nice balance in this beer.  The bourbon does not over take the brown ale.  It is pretty slight.  This is unlike most barrel aged brews.   Perrin in my opinion has done a great job making this brew.  It comes in at 6.9% but it drinks like 5% ABV.  I will say Perrin is keeping to their goal as a brewery.  They wanted to make session-able beers.  They hit homerun with this one. I just wish this was everyday in package.  I highly recommend this beer in package or draft.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Bell’s Brewery Jupiter The Bringer Of Jollity Brown Ale

image

In this special beer blog, we are going to get into another brew from the Planet Series from Bell’s Brewery.  It is Jupiter The Bringer Of Jollity Brown Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Michigan craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read to get to know this Michigan craft brewery.  Let us get into this Imperial Brown Ale.

This special release ale has a nice brown color with a constant off white to slightly tan color head. The aroma has a sweet nutty, malty, and a little to fade alcohol notes. The taste of this fourth release from the planet series has a slight alcohol burn in the front of the pallet with some nice malty and nutty notes in the back part of the tasting experience. The aftertaste has a nutty notes that hangs around for a bit. It is kind of drinkable but it is a nice sipping beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

This is one of a seven part series inspired by Gustavo Holst’s musical composition, “The Planets.” Strap in and embark on a flavor tour of our solar system – in the order of Holst’s piece. Mars to Neptune.

Here is a description from their website (www.bellsbeer.com):

Bell’s Brewery Planet Series

Jupiter – The Bringer of Jollity

TASTING NOTES: The fourth release in our Planets Series shines the spotlight on specialty malts, while the hops take on more of a supporting role. Brewed with seven different varieties of malt and hopped for a balanced bitterness, this Imperial Brown Ale has bready, biscuity, toasty notes along with light chocolate and roast flavors. This beer is robust, warming and satisfying like the piece of music it was named after.

Closing, I was pretty excited to see this series of beers to hit the market.  There has been some really good beers and there are a few bad ones.  I should say they are good but did not live up to the price that was being charged.  Series of beers like this makes the beer drinker retry their everyday beers.  I have to say that I have not revisited any of their everyday beers.  I will now get into this brew.  This is a great beer. There is not too many really good Imperial Brown Ale.  I do not believe there is not too many Imperial Brown Ales period in the market.  There is a nice balance that the beer drinker will be sipping or dare he or she to make it a drinkable.  I hope they bring it back full-time or a seasonal. They did a great job on it. A ton of flavor and I love the nice nutty notes.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Smuttynose Brewing Old Brown Dog Ale

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a craft brewery, who is Smuttynose Brewing, that finally made it to Michigan beer market.  We are going to get into one of their everyday brew, which is Old Brown Dog Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog post on their Winter Ale, you know the history of this Northeast craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read it to get to know Smutty.  Let us get into this English style brown ale.

It has a clear brown color with a tan color head on this brown ale. The head disappears over time. The aroma has some nutty notes. The taste has a sweet malty to nutty notes with a dry nutty aftertaste. It is pretty slight and crisp for the aftertaste. It is a pretty drinkable beer.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.smuttynose.com

Twitter:  @smuttynosebeer

In closing, I am pretty excited to have this craft brewery in the Michigan market finally.  I was a pretty big fan of their beers when I lived in the Chicago market. I am still a huge fan if theirs. This craft brewery is no joke.  They are growing and looking to keep pushing themselves on their beers and knowledge.  This is a classic English style brown ale.  It has a beautiful color and appearance.  There is some nice nutty aroma.  The taste has some nice sweet malty notes that keeps you coming back, however, the aftertaste is pretty crisp unlike most brown ales.  This is a well thought and built brew.  They did a great job.  This is second to Goose Island Nut Brown Ale.  I have to say Brooklyn Brown Ale is up there too.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Magic Hat Snow Roller Hoppy Brown Ale (2014)

image

In this winter beer blog, we are going to sample the new winter seasonal from Magic Hat Brewery.  It is called Snow Roller Hoppy Brown Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this craft brewery.  Let us get into this brown ale.

It has a clear brown color with a nice white head on this brown ale. The aroma has a fated nutty notes. The taste has a nutty notes with a hoppy malty dry finish for the aftertaste. It is pretty drinkable winter ale.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

The ancient ritual of brewing a distinctly rich and flavored beer is a performance to behold.  Our mysterious melange of time-honored ingredients harmonize with chaotic chemistry humble patience, and blind faith to create this unique beer to share in the rousing company of kindred spirits.  Cheers!

Here is a description from their website (www.magichat.net):

Winter calls for walls of white and the Snow Roller begins his work. Riding in on wicked winds, he dusts the naked trees and covers the brown barren fields that gasp a bitter breath at the touch of snow. No place is left free of flurry by his icy surf, save for those gathered together in good spirits. Bundle up and let the Snow Roller take your soul for a roll.

Snow Roller rides a brisk hop wind that blows a bold bitterness across malt flavors of caramel and toasted biscuit.

Malts: Pale, Victory, Chocolate, Caramel 40L, Caramel 120L
Hops: Apollo, CTZ

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.magichat.net

Closing, this is beyond their best seasonal beer.  It is perfect for the season and it is kind of same as some of the winter seasonal but still unique to separate itself from the rest on the market. They are feeding the current theme in the craft world and it is hops and hoppy beers.  This is what makes this beer special.  It has a nice hoppy notes with malty to caramel notes.   I enjoyed this beer and I am looking forward to having a few more pints of this awesome liquid.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it! Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Bell’s Best Brown Ale (2014)

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into the fall seasonal from Bell’s Brewing.  It is Best Brown Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this midwest craft brewery.  Let us get into this brown ale.

It has a cloudy brown to dark brown color with a tan constant color head. The smell has a slight malty, nutty, and toffee notes.  The taste has a sweet malty to nutty notes with a dry toffee aftertaste.  It is a pretty drinkable beer.

Here is a description from their website (www.bellsbeer.com):

A smooth, toasty brown ale, Best Brown Ale is a mainstay in our fall lineup. With hints of caramel and cocoa, the malt body has the depth to stand up to cool weather, but does not come across as heavy. This balancing act is aided by the generous use of American hops.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.bellsbeer.com

Twitter:  @bellsbrewery

In the end, It is a nice English brown ale. There is not too many really good English style brown ales from an American Craft breweries.  I like it.  I know Brooklyn Brown Ale and Goose Island Nut Brown Ale are around.  Brooklyn version is pretty weak and not very good but Goose Island try to match the Samuel Smith Nut Brown Ale, which was the first brown ale ever made.  I love that Goose Island Nut Brown Ale.  Too bad, they do not make that beer anymore.  There is a nice English Brown Ale from Frankenmuth Brewery that is Brewpub only brew.  Brown Ales are a tough sell in the spring and summer.  When the fall and winter season, it is a little easier.  Now a days, most craft beer drinkers want everything but a brown ale and in most part lagers.  This is a good English Brown Ale.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!
