New Beer Blog Lake Of Bays Old North Mocha Porter

In this beer blog, we are going to get into Lake Of Bays Old North Mocha Porter.  This craft brewery is from Canada.  They are part of the government back company in Canada.  There is not much history on this craft brewery.  There is nothing on their website and not much on the website.  Let us get into this porter.

This porter has a jet black color with a light tan color head that is really not there anymore. The aroma has a coffee to chocolate notes. The taste has a nice creamy chocolate notes with a dry coffee finish for the aftertaste.  It is a sipping beer.

Tasting Notes

Pours almost black with beautifully creamy, mocha-coloured foam. Upon further inspection, the colours are actually deep ruby, garnet and dark brown. The aromas include cappuccino, mocha, chocolate and vanilla with a hint of molasses and pie crust. The flavours include subtle sweetness with dark chocolate, mild coffee and tiramisu. The mouth feel is dry (fairly mild) with some initial sweetness. The finish is medium-to-moderate bitterness that lingers and delivers a nice coffee profile that arrives quite late. 8% alc./vol.

Closing, I have to say I enjoyed this beer.  I know most breweries in Canada makes some great brews.  Their weakest is beyond far better than most bad craft breweries in the states.  There is a nice balance from the coffee and the porter notes.  Porter has some burn chocolate and natural coffee notes.  Lake Of Bays added some coffee and made it a focus on in this brew.  They did a great job to make the coffee notes shine but not over take the beer.  This is a like an cold Mocha coffee.  I highly recommend this beer if you can find it.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Sports Thought Thursday Blog Chicago Cubs And Joe Maddon


 

In this Sports Thought Thursday Blog, we are going to get into the new hiring and firing of their managers.  After another year of losing and celebrating 100 years of Wrigley Field, it was time for some more changes on the field and managing team.  There was some good things that happen under Rick Renteria.  Let’s get into the 2014 year.

 

2014 Season

The Chicago Cubs record was 73 – 89 record.  Winning percent was .451.  They had a winning record at home.  They started out the season really slow and former pitcher Jeff Samardzija struggled to get his first one in the first month of the season.  He gave the Cubs some good to excite games.  They were below .500 for the first half of the season but as soon as the trade deadline came around and they traded off some key pieces.  They kind of turn their season around.  You saw the growth of Anthony Rizzo and Starlin Castro and a come back year and career of Jake Arrieta.  They saw part of their second half season with long winning streaks.  They saw some of their top prospects come up to the majors and help them win.  The sad thing is Rick earn to come back and he helped the growth of the kids. This is what the front office wanted.


New Manager

This is a business decision and there is no way to be loyal to someone when the goal is to win the World Series.  When a top five manager in the game comes available, you hire him.  This goes for any business or any sport.  They are not saying this is going to happen or not.  This does not guarantee a World Series but this sends a huge message to their fans and rest of the teams in baseball.  They were entering free agency looking to sign a top pitcher for their rotation.  More kids are coming to the majors in a few years.  Joe Madden experience young but talented team a few years ago with Tampa Rays.  He won AL East when the Red Soxs and Yankees were still really good teams along with Orioles team up and coming.  He also took a team to the World Series for the first time in team history.  He was manager of the year. Joe Madden left the Rays because of his former GM, who was Andrew Friendman, now works for the LA Dodgers.

Closing, I agree with everyone and the front office of the Chicago Cubs.  Yes, it sucks and unfair.  He does deserve better.  However, when a coach of his standards and elite comes available, you go and hire him.  This improves the Chicago Cubs.  This makes it easier for free agents to come to Chicago to play for Cubs.  They have not won the World Series in over 100 years.  The attitude of the team has changed since Theo and company came to aboard.  Joe completes the message from the front office to the dugout.  The players of the Chicago Cubs are going to have so much fun on the field that is something Joe brings to the field. This is something that has not been there on the Northside in a long time. I feel better being a Chicago Cubs fan.  The front office is not saying it but I believe this is the coach that will bring my Chicago Cubs a World Series.  I cannot wait for next season and beyond.  Go get yours Cubs and Go Cubbies!    Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog New Holland Brewing The Carhartt Woodsman Barrel Aged Pale Ale

New Holland Brewery Carhartt Woodsman Barrel-Aged Pale Ale is the brewery and beer featured in this blog.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Midwest Craft Brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know New Holland Brewery.  Let us get into this Pale Ale.

It has a cloudy copper to darken golden color with a white head on this pale ale. The aroma has a faded to slight notes. I cannot pick up what it is. The taste has a light citrus to earthy with oak notes.  The aftertaste has oak notes finish.  It is kind of drinkable beer.

Closing, I do not know how I felt about this brew.  I am trying to keep positive about this beer and craft brewery.  I just find myself at times looking at New Holland as an average craft brewery.  They do make some good beers. They shine the most in their high-end beers.  I am talking about 22oz and four packs.  I was interested in this beer because this could be the beer to turn around their six-pack line.  It is an average brew.  I love their effort and out of the box thinking.  I did liked it but I just feel the Pale Ale does not work too well with aging in barrels.  I love when it is a Brown, Stout, or Porter.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Why And Why Not Drink Local Craft Beers And Ciders?


In this special beer blog, we are going to get into a hot issue in the huge growing market of craft beers, ciders, and breweries.  There has been a huge growth and it is coming out of the mass produced beer companies.  There is home brewers taking their passion of beer making to the public.  The questions that I am going to try to answer for myself are “Why And Why Not Drink Local Beers And Ciders?”

Why Drink Local Craft Beers And Ciders?

It is pretty simple.  Money stays in the state and/or the local area.  There will be more jobs created because of these breweries.   The money keeps coming in and out of the brewery.  It works if the brewery is buying supplies from local companies and most do this practice.  Most craft breweries take homes in old and empties buildings.  They resolve these old buildings back to the way they were back in their heyday.  Of course, they put their brewery and restaurant in them.  The other things that these breweries in most cases.  They create more jobs at distributors.  They hire a marketing firm or their own people to run it.  Just like most businesses, they will put money back in the economy.

Why Not Drink Local Craft Beers And Ciders?

I get beat up about half of the time when I bring this up to people at craft beer bars or stores in my local market.  I get it because everyone wants to support their local businesses and I am one of them.  I have to be honest with myself and others around me.  I heard this when I lived in Chicago and now here in the Michigan.  When traveling to other cities around the US, I saw these same signs and heard it from the locals.  When trying these beers or ciders at home or your local watering hole, be honest to yourself because it will save you from the painful drinking experience.  I had a pretty ugly drinking experience with a local craft brewery in Chicago.  I kept on telling myself that I love this beer and brewery.  I just finally admitted to myself that they are not that good.  I started to look at local craft brewery in a different light.  I give breweries credit when they put a good beer to the market.  I also give them credit for thinking outside the box.

In closing, I am not saying do not drink local beers and ciders.  If their beers are good, drink them and support them.  If their beers are not good, you as a beer drinker, customer, and buyer needs to send them a message.  They need to improve or go away.  This is the ugly side to the business world.  I am catching myself doing it it again.  Just be honest with yourself about these beers or ciders in your area.  There is new craft breweries opening every day and there will be more good to great beers and bad beers.  Remember, you are voting with your wallet.  I would love to hear your thoughts on this topic.  Support the local good beer and let the bad go away.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Mountain Town Brewing Train Wrack Amber Ale

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a brewery for the first time on this blog which is Mountain Town Brewing.  It is their Train Wrack Amber Ale.  Here is a little history from their website (www.mountaintownbrew.com):

In 1996 Mountain Town Station Brewing Co. & Steakhouse opened its doors as a premier restaurant, wine cellar and micro brewery; and has grown ever since in its menu concept, wine inventory and beer recipes. In 2007, a separate company was formed called Mountain Town Brewing Company. This new brewery operation is strictly manufacturing and packaging using the same recipes that have been successfully developed for years at the brewpub. In 2008, shipments of beers such as the Gamblers Golden Ale, Railyard Raspberry Wheat and Cow Catcher Red Ale were flying out of the brewery and into restaurants and bars across Michigan. Look for these and many more beers at your favorite bar and restaurant. If they don’t have our beers request that they be put on tap!

As you can see they brew several different beer styles from cans and bottles.  We are going to get into the beer.

It has a cloudy amber color with a nice white head.  There is really no smell.  It is pretty fade.  The taste has a malty notes with a hint of honey aftertaste.  The honey makes the aftertaste smooth and a crisp finish.  It is an extremely drinkable beer.

Closing, this beer is pretty interesting brew.  I was taken a little back when tasting this beer.  I did enjoy it.  I did not know how the honey would work with this amber ale.  I had honey in beers and amber lagers.  I was pretty interested to see how some of the malty to some fruity notes would react with the honey sweetness.  This is average beer and it is nothing special.  I recommend you trying this beer just because how unique it is.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Samuel Adams Cream Stout

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another brew from the Boston Beer Company.  They are known around the world as Samuel Adams Brewery.  It is their Cream Stout.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this east coast craft brewery.  Let us get into this cream stout.

It has a jet black color with a tan head on this milk stout.  The aroma has a chocolate to coffee notes with a slight caramel notes.  The taste has a creamy to roasted chocolate to coffee notes with a nice slight caramel to wrap up the tasting notes.  The aftertaste has a nice burned coffee notes. It is a sipping stout.

Closing, it is a nice milk stout.  I saw this one on the shelf and I thought why not.  I never had this brew and I thought it cannot bad.  This is not like all the rest of the craft stouts on the market.  I was not a big fan of it but it was not that bad of a beer.  It is an average to slightly below average brew.  At least, the price was right on for the liquid.  Some of the stouts in the market are over price and are average or below average.  This is an average beer at the right price.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Southern Tier 2x Stout

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another brew from Southern Tier.  It is their 2x Stout.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this east coast craft brewery.  Let us get into this milk stout.

It has a jet black color without a head on it but there was a nice tan color head.  The aroma has a rich chocolate notes with hints of a burned coffee.  The taste has a smooth and creamy chocolate notes with a burned chocolate dry bitter finish.  It is kind of drinkable beer.

In the end, I really enjoyed this stout.  I am a pretty big fan of the milk stout over all the rest of the stouts in the stouts world.  This is a great stout and it is perfect brew for dessert or just by itself.  It will go great with a nice cigar on a fall night.  There is some nice cream chocolate notes that makes you coming back for more.  I love the burned chocolate dry bitter finish.  It is kind of drinkable but it is a nice sipping brew.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Music Monday White Wizzard The Devil’s Cut


In this Music Monday blog, we are going to get into the latest record from White Wizzard.  It is called “The Devil’s Cut.”  We are going to get into the history and then the music off this new record.  Let us get into the history.

History:

White Wizzard was founded in 2007 by bass player, Jon Leon.  He was looking to bring back the classic hard rock and metal sound to fans looking for it.  The band released their first EP, which was called “White Wizzard,” in 2008.  Even with some success at first, the band loss three of their orignal members.  They went on to start a new band called Holy Grail that has similar music style.  Jon Leon signed a contract with Earache Records and then started to search for members for the second line up.  After filling the second line up, the band released their second EP, which is called “High Speed GTO,” in 2009.  In 2010, the band released their first full length record, which was called “Over The Top.”  White Wizzard was nominated for Best New Artist at Metal Hammer Golden Gods.  In 2011, the band released their second record, which was called “Flying Tigers.”  The band in 2013 released their third record, which was called  “The Devil’s Cut.”  White Wizzard put out their new single, which was called “Marathon Of Dreams,” on their new label White Wizzard Records.  This is first time in history of the band that features Jon Leon on lead singer and Devin Lebsack.  This band has went through several line up changes after the release of “The Devil’s Cut.”  Let us get into the music.

Track List:

Forging The Steel

There is a nice classic hard rock driving music at the beginning of the song.  I love the guitar work at the beginning of the song.  This music sounds like something out of the late 1970’s to early 1980’s.  This is a nice intro song to the record.

Strike The Iron

I love the blend from the first track to the second track.  The music pace has picked up.  The singer sounds like someone from Riot or Saxon.  I love the lyrics and singing.  This song has a sound like it came right from Riot.  I love the short guitar solo.  They wrote a nice opening track for this record.  There is a nice expanded guitar solo towards the back half of the song.  I love the music towards the end of the music.  It sounds like two different songs on the back half of the song.

Kings Of The Highway

I love the slower pace of this song.  I love singing and lyrics.  I love the theme of this song.  Jon put some thought on the lyrics.  He did a great job on it.   This is a great song but I feel it should be a little faster.  I love the guitar solo towards the end of the song.  There is a guitar solo to take the song out.  It has a nice fade out.

Lightening In My Hands

The beginning of the song remains me some old school Iron Maiden music.  There is some nice guitar and bass playing.  Even the singing remains me of Bruce.  I love the lyrics.  I love the guitar solo towards the end.  I also love the bass playing.  There is another nice well written guitar solo towards the end of the song.  I love the trade-off on the guitar solos.

Steal Your Mind

There is a nice slight dark tone guitar playing at the beginning of the song.  I love the slow down to bring the singer with some nice guitar work.  There is some nice singing and well written lyrics.  This is a great song but I just feel it is too slow for my taste.  I love the short guitar solos throughout the song.  It is becoming too much now.  This is too long but it is a great song.  I just wish it was a little faster.  I love how it the pace finally picks up towards the back half of the song.

The Devil’s Cut

I love the drumming and how the guitar playing is at the beginning.  The shinning light is the bass playing.  It is some awesome playing.  I am not too sure on how I feel about the singing from the singer.  I love the lyrics.  At the beginning, I just felt he was too low but as the song moves on it did get better.

Torpedo Of Truth

I love the pace and music at the beginning.  There is a some nice drumming on this track.  There is some nice guitar playing with some nice guitar solos.  I love the singing with the back up singing.  The lyrics are well written but I am not liking the title of the song that much along with the chorus.  I am really not liking this song so much.  I could do without it on this record.

Storm Chaser

I am loving the bass playing and drumming at the beginning.  I am not liking the guitar playing so far on this song.  The singing seems a little off and not really fitting with the song  The lyrics are really below average.  They could do so much better.  Some of these songs on this record are starting to sound the same.  There is a nice guitar solo towards the end of the song.  It seems every song on this record does not need a guitar solo.  This song could live without a guitar solo.

The Sun Also Rises

I am loving the acoustic guitar at the beginning.  It is about time.  I have been waiting for one song like this.  I love the bass playing in the background.  I love the singing and lyrics.  The main part of the song sounds just like an old Iron Maiden song.  The singing like some from White Lion.  I am really liking this song.  It has a nice driving song.   This song is way too long unless.  I love change of the music at the half way point.  Oh!  Once again another guitar solo.  I love how they ended this record.

Closing, I have enjoyed this band since their start and I will always buy their music.  I have to say this record has some great songs but overall it is pretty disappointing.  I know in the past hard rock and metal music had guitar solos in their songs.  I just felt they went over the top on the guitar solos.  No to plug one of their songs.  The singer is spot on to the original singer.  I am pretty worried about this band and their future.  They only have two members in this band at this time.  I know this band went through several line up changes but I hope they can get it together again.  There is some well written songs on this record and there are songs you will be skipping.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Alaskan Brewery Hop Thermia Double IPA

It has a clear copper color with a semi white head.  The smell has slight citrus notes.  The taste has a citrus notes with a citrus hop bitter finish for the aftertaste.  It is a sipping beer.

Closing, I know you know that I am a huge fan of this brewery.  I loved this brewery before they came to the State Of Michigan.  I was always excited when my friend Dean would bring some bottles back from the West Coast.  When they finally made it to Michigan, I have been going crazy finding out what is being released in the state.  There were several beers that are here that I never had.  I was excited to get them out-of-the-way.  This Double IPA was one of them.  I love the name and the packaging.  I love how it is a nice sipping beer.  There is some complex flavor going on in this beer.  I love it.  It has a nice color and aroma.  This is a great beer.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Cheboygan Brewing Oktoberfest (2014)

It has a nice clear light amber to dark copper color with a semi white head.  The smell has a candy to sweet caramel notes.  The taste has a sweet candy to caramel notes with a dry malty notes for the aftertaste.  It is pretty drinkable beer.

The beer, created by the brewery’s operation manager and brewmaster Tim Perry, who was inspired by the 1976 Späten Oktoberfest bier from Munich, Germany, is orange in hue with a pronounced malt presence. 6% ABV IBU 28.  Available in the Fall.  Available in six packs seasonally.

In the end, I have been really impressed with all the fall seasonals asides the Erdinger, Griffin Claw, Atwater Brewery, and Weihenstephaner.  I have to say those were bad.  I believe that is four out of fourteen fall beers.  This brewery puts another good one on that list.  I am so happy to have a great streak of fall beers this season.  I love the candy to caramel notes from the malt. It is pretty sweet but yet has a nice malty dry finish.  It will have you coming back and drink more and more of this beer.  I highly recommend this beer.  You can find this one in the Michigan market.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/
