New Beer Blog Pipeworks Brewing Chai Dog Imperial Milk Stout

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a second brew reviewed on this blog by Pipeworks Brewing.  The brew I am talking about is their Chai Dog.  If you read my earlier beer blog, you are up to speed on the history of this young and upcoming brewery.  If you have not, please, read the blog post from yesterday to get up to speed.  Let us get into the brewery.

It has a jet black color with a semi tan head on the beer.  The smell is a heavy chai spices.  The taste is extremely creamy with heavy chai spices.  The aftertaste has a heavy chai spices that last for a long time.  It is not drinkable unless you are a chai tea coffee drinker.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

Chai Dog is our Eastern answer to the coffee-centric caffeine concoctions popular here in  the West.  This silky smooth milk stout is brewed with cacao nibs, green cardamom, vanilla bean, star anise, black peppercorn and cinnamon.  This delicious blend of spices creates a balance and complexity will transport you from your local watering hole to an authentic, old tea house in the heart of Mumbai.

This beer is Unfiltered.  Sedimentation may occur.  For best flavor, allow bottle to chill for two hours before serving allowing for the natural yeast to settle out.  Pour slowly into your favorite glass, being careful to leave sediment behind.

In closing, I am not a fan of this brew and it was hard to put it down.  I passed it to a friend because I could not finish it.  I have said this several times on my blog posts just because I do not like it.  It does not mean you will not like it.  I write my thoughts on this blog with truth to me.  I will have to say this about this brew.  I believe you have to be a fan of Chai Tea.  I can see some people who do not like Chai Tea liking this beer.  Please, let me know what you think of this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Pipeworks Brewing Raspberry Truffle Abduction

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a brewery I have been wanting to try in a while.  I am talking about Pipeworks Brewing and the beer is their Raspberry Truffle Abduction.  Pipeworks Brewing was founded in 2012 in Chicago, IL by Beejay Oslon and Gerrit LewisThe brewery is located around the Bucktown area of Chicago.  They brew several different beers and bottle them in 22oz bottles to 750ML.  There is not much history on this brewery because it is young and upcoming brewery.  Let us get into the beer.

It has a jet black color with a constant tan head on the beer.  The smell is heavy raspberry to it.  The taste of this light to medium body beer is heavy dry chocolate cover raspberry.  I can barely taste any of the stout.  It is really drinkable.

Here is a desecration from the beer bottle:

It is a shame human, that we must wipe from your memory the rich chocolate delight that is Raspberry Truffle Adduction.  Its soft raspberry flavor blossoming like frivolous human emotion, galactic absconce at the long-fingered hands of we cosmic plumbers.

In closing, I was pretty impressed with this beer.  The only thing I would change, however, I do not think the brewery can cut down on how much raspberries they use in the beer.  There is light taste to this stout but the raspberry over took the stout.  The stout comes across as chocolate cover raspberry.  Overall, this is a really good beer.  Please, go try this beer and let me know what you think of it.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Arbor Brewing Mackinac Island Fudge Stout

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another beer from Arbor Brewing Company. The beer is one of their seasonals and it is called Mackinac Island Fudge Stout. If you read my earlier beer blog posts on this brewery, you know the history of it. If you have not, please, read those posts to get to know this brewery. Let us get into the beer.

It has a jet black color with a tan head that is strong when pouring but disappears after a while.  The smell is a rich coco to the stout.  The taste is burn but smooth to creamy chocolate.  The aftertaste is a dry coco to it.  To me, it is drinkable but to the general beer drinker, it is not drinkable.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.arborbrewing.com

Closing, this stout was really good and it is up on my top five list.  I was pretty stun on how good it is in the bottle.  I love how they used Fudge from Mackinac Island.  I love the packaging and the name.  They kept this a Michigan proud in the name and the type of packaging.  I highly recommend you trying this beer.  I did not see it on their website so I am not sure if they still making this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Stone Brewing Wootstout

image

In this beer blog,  we are going to get into a special limited release and special beer to me.  It is from Stone Brewery and the beer is their Wootstout.  This brew was team brewing process from Drew Curtis, Greg Koch, and Wil Wheaton.  If you read my early beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this brewery.  If you have not read those posts, please, read those beer blog posts to get to know this brewery.  Let us get into the beer.

image

It has a jet black color with a constant tan to light brown head on the beer.  The smell is chocolate cover pecans.  The taste of this light to medium body beer is chocolate cover pecans notes. There is some vanilla notes that blends nicely with the pecans. The aftertaste is a dry coffee to toffee pecan aftertaste.  For being a stout, this is scary and extremely drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

“Wil Wheaton first called us in 2004 to ask if it’d be OK for him to put the Arrogant Bastard logo on this blog’s website (back when people still asked permission to do such things), and I just so happened to answer the phone (back when I still answered the main line sometimes).  Since he was so damn enthusiastic about our beers, I said ‘Sure, no problem.’ all the while thinking ‘ Hmmm… this guy’s name sounds familiar.’

Months later, in a serendipitous turn of fate, I reached out to our 10,000th email newsletter subscriber … drumroll … Wil Wheaton.  Since his gigs in the iconic Stand By Me and Star Trek: The Next Generation, Wil has become quite the renaissance man, adding author, w00tstock innovator, and homebrewer to his resume.  His enthusiasm for the fermentable arts and our beer was such that after many occasions of sharing grog over the years, we decided it was time to brew in collaboration.

It was no-brainer for us to choose Drew Curtis – who many know as the twisted mind behind Fark.com – as our third cohort.  Drew was an old friend of Wil’s that I had serendipitously met (when he saw me and told me, ‘Dude, I love your beer!’) and enjoyed many beers with at the famous TED confenece three years in a row.  The beer you told before you is an Imperial stout made with wheat (Wil pretty much insisted), and we also paid tribute to Drew’s Kentucky roots by adding rye and pecans to the mix and partially aging the beer in bourbon barrels.  The result?  Nothing short of serendipitous.”

Greg Koch @stonegreg CEO and Co-founder, Stone Brewing

“Being a geek isn’t about what you love:  it’s about how you love it.  I’m a sci-fi geek, a disruptive technology geek, and a tabletop  game geek.  I’ve been lucky to do lots of work in those fields, but this is the first time I got to be a professional beer geek, and it was awesome.”

Wil Wheaton @wilw Actor, Homebrewer and Professional Geek

“Beer tastes like my website … all over the map, but I’ve never met a beer I didn’t like.”

Drew Curtis @drewcurtis Founder, Fark.com & News Geek

www.stonebrewing.com/collab

Here is a description from their website (www.stonebrewing.com/collab):

From the most unlikely yet intensely imaginative trio that is actor and uber-geek champion Wil Wheaton, alternative news website Fark.com creator Drew Curtis and Stone CEO/Co-founder Greg Koch, comes an imperial stout unlike any ever made. Brewed with rye, wheat malt and pecans and partially aged in Bourbon whiskey barrels, this viscous yet silken brew erupts with an oaky, nutty bouquet and rich flavors of vanilla, toast and bitter chocolate. Enjoy now or cellar this celebration of nth degree passion and geekery applied most gracefully to the craft of brewing and collaboration-Drew Curtis/Wil Wheaton/Greg Koch Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout!

Closing out, many of these beers hit the shelf and go pretty quickly.  In most cases, these beers let many of the beer drinkers down with the liquid.  This brew is totally different.  These three guys put a ton of thought behind it and put their stamp on it, which you can see the details above in description from the beer bottle selection.  This is a great brew.  I love the stout and the wheat malt makes this stout light in body.   I love the chocolate and the pecans gives this brew another element.  It blends nicely with the beer and then age the beer in barrels that gives some nice vanilla notes.  If you can find this beer, I highly recommend this brew.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Fuller’s London Porter

image

Fuller’s London Porter is the next  brew that will be featured on this beer blog.  If you read my beer blog post on their ESB, you know the history of this brewery.  If you have not read that beer blog post, please, that beer blog post to get to know this brewery.  Let us get into the beer.

It has a jet black color without a head on the beer.  The smell is rich chocolate black coffee.   The taste of this light to medium body beer is dark chocolate and coffee with a dry dark chocolate aftertaste. It is not drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

Fuller’s London Porter is an award-winning example of this historic English style; smooth and creamy with delicious chocolate and coffee flavors derived from the roasted malts.

The Griffin Brewery in Chiswick, London, has been brewing fine ales since 1654.

The Fuller, Smith & Turner partnership, dating back to 1845, brews an excellent range of award-winning ales, many of which are available in the USA, including London Pride pale ale and the world’s original ESB.  I hope you will enjoy trying all our fine ales.

Here is a description from their website (www.fullers.co.uk):

London Porter

Fuller’s London Porter, is widely regarded as the World’s Finest Porter: having won awards all over the world, London Porter is regularly voted the number one Porter on beer websites such as http://www.ratebeer.com, a tremendous accolade to our brewing team. The origins of Porter date back to London in the early eighteenth century, and the beer has seen fame around the world, from Ireland to the USA and Australia. It was the dominant beer style in London for quite some time, and takes its name from the street and river porters of the city who carried goods around the streets.

Tasting notes

Fuller’s London Porter captures the flavours of those original brews perfectly, although you won’t find a cloudy pint these days! Rich, dark and complex, at 5.4% ABV the beer has an outstanding depth of flavour.
It is brewed from a blend of Brown, Crystal and Chocolate malts for a creamy delivery balanced by traditional Fuggles hops. The range of flavours works well with a wide variety of foods, ranging from rich meat dishes, to oysters, and even chocolate puddings.

In the end, this is a great classic porter from Fuller’s.  This beer is rich and smooth with a ton of chocolate and coffee notes.  There is a lot going in this brew.  I can see many American Craft Breweries trying to make their own version of this great beer.  If you love porters, this is one porter you have to try before you make any judgement on other porters in the world.  This porter is in my top five porters of all time.  I recommend you trying this brew.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Frankenmuth Tornado Black IPA

image

In this special beer blog from Michigan Brewer’s Guild Summerfest, we are going to get into my one of my favorite craft breweries and beer from Michigan.  The brewery is Frankenmuth Brewery and the beer is Tornado Black IPA.  I have been wanting try this beer for a long time.  I could not find it whenever I was in town.  I was happy to see it being poured at this beer festival.  If you read my earlier beer blog on their beers, you know the history of this brewery.  If you have not read those posts, please, read those posts to get to know the beers and the brewery.  Let us get into the beer.

It has a black color without a head on the beer.  There is a slight coffee and chocolate to pine and citrus.  The taste is a chocolate circus with a dry fruity notes. It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.frankenmuthbrewery.com

Closing out, I really enjoyed this brew.  This beer did not disappoint me at all.  This is a pretty unique beer and it is hard to master on the brewery side of things.  It is hard for most craft beer drinkers to get to know and enjoy this beer style.  I believe this beer will bring some experience craft beer drinkers over to the Black IPA beer style.  I was pretty stun on how drinkable this brew is too.  The other thing that makes this beer pretty impressive is the fact it is coming from German base brewing style.  They did a great job and I am proud and honor they are making great beer in Michigan.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Right Brain Brewery Dead Kettle IPA

image

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a brewery from Michigan I have been waiting to try for a while.  It is Right Brain Brewery and the brew is their Dead Kettle IPA.  I had a chance to try this beer at Michigan Brewer’s Guild Summerfest.  Right Brain is located on the north-west part of the state and the City Of Traverse City, Michigan.  There is not too much information on this young brewery.  Let us get into the beer.

It has a cloudy copper color with a constant white head.  The smell is hints of grapefruit.  The taste is ripping the skin off a grapefruit without aftertaste.  It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

Working as a brewer means practicing your craft, knowing your equipment, and always being able to think on your feet.

Many years ago a dead brewing kettle was the spark that lead to eventual creation of this Right Brain Classic.

Showcasing heavy citrus notes and hop aroma, Dead Kettle is light bodied and refreshing.  Strong Grapefruit notes make way for a pleasantly bitter finish.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.rightbrainbrewery.com

Twitter:  @rightbrainbrew

In closing, this beer is something else.  Of course, it is in a good way.  I love my IPA’s and this one is on my top ten beers.  I love the huge and heavy grapefruit beer.  It is extremely balance and this beer is done up right.  I love the packaging and the story about the name of the brewery.  I hope in the future they put out 12oz bottles or cans or 16oz cans.  I am not a huge fan of 22oz bottles.  I highly highly HIGHLY recommend this brew.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Blue Point Brewing Toxic Sludge Black IPA

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a brew from one of my favorite breweries from New York City.  It is Blue Point Brewery and it is their Toxic Sludge Black IPA.  Blue Point was founded on the Long Island in 1998 by Mark Burford and Peter Cotter.  Blue Point is the largest craft brewery on Long Island and they are ranked #34 on the craft breweries in the United States.  They brew several different beer styles.  Let us get into beer.

It has a dark brown color that if put up to light you can see it but not see through.  It has a constant white head on the beer.  The smell is slight coffee to chocolate with a hint of smoke malt.  The taste has a chocolate to citrus with a dry hop finish at the tip of the tongue.  It is like they use a Stout and India Pale Ale blend.  This big beer is pretty drinkable.

Here is a description from their website (www.bluepointbrewing.com):

We originally brewed this Black IPA to benefit birds affected by BP’s Gulf oil spill and donated all of the proceeds to the Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research. The charity program has ended but the beer became so popular that even with a name like Toxic Sludge, we had to keep brewing it once a year. Five hop varieties go into each batch at four stages of the brewing process to combine a hoppy India Pale Ale with a rich, dark malt base for a full-bodied ale that’s big on flavor.

In closing, I love this beer style and I am glad there are more and more popping up on the market.  I can tell who is making a good Black IPA or a bad one.  I have to say this Black IPA is in my top five.  Most craft brewery make their Black IPA with their porter recipe.  To me, this one is made with their stout.  There is a nice balance from the hops and malt.  Stout is not overpowering the IPA and the other way around.  I love the packaging  and the fact it is in cans.  I recommend you trying this brew from this Long Island  brewery.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Firestone Walker Velvet Merlin Oatmeal Stout

image

In this beer blog, we are going to sample out our first beer from Firestone Walker and the brewery is their Velvet Merlin Oatmeal Stout.  This is brewery is from California and founded 1996 by Adam Firestone and David Walker.  The brewery name from the last names from the founders.  They brewery several different beer styles but they are known for their hoppy beers like most west coast breweries.  Let us get into the beer.

This winter seasonal has a jet black color without a head on it.  The smell is chocolate to toffee.  The taste of this full body ale is chocolate to touch of coffee notes.  It is a sipping to almost kind of drinkable.

Here is a description from their website (www.firestonebeer.com):

A decadent Oatmeal Stout brimming with cocoa and espresso aromas.  This beer features a rich, dark chocolate and roasted coffee flavor with a creamy mouth feel and wonderfully dry finish. The addition of U.S. grown fuggles hops contributes the perfect amount of bitterness to this exceptionally balanced beer.

REMEMBER: Watch for bottled on dates located on the necks or bottom left corner of the label for each of our beers.  Our beer is not pasteurized, so it is best when stored at 44F or below, out of light and within 120 days of the bottled on date…this ensures freshness and ultimately a great Firestone Walker beer!

In closing, I really enjoyed drinking this beer.  I love how it is not a drinkable beer because I can sit there and enjoy it.  I want to pick up everything that is going on in the beer.  I love the coffee to toffee notes from the beer.  This is one of my favorite stout beer style.  I love how their website tells you to make sure you have fresh beer and how to store your beer.  This is a great beer and I highly recommend you trying this stout.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog 3 Fonteinen Zwet.be Belgian Porter

image

Happy 4th of July, we are going to get into 3 Fonteinen Zwet.be in this beer blog.  It is a pretty unique beer.  It is a Belgian Porter, which is unique as it is, but they use the Begian yeast during the brewing process.  3 Fonteinen was founded in 1887 in Belgium.  They were brewing lambics beers.  It is style of blending old and young beer into one.  It was sold 1953 to Gaston De Belder and it has been the family since.  The current owners have expanded the brewery and they have been exploring into different beer styles like the one we are review here.  Let us get into this unique beer.

It has a jet black color with a constant tan to light brown color head. The smell is a dark chocolate cover fruit.  The taste of this full body is a dark chocolate with a tart aftertaste. It is a sipping beer with a cigar.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

This unusual ale is the brainchild of Armand Debelder, brewer and blender of the world-famous Drie Fonteinen lambics.  A Belgian Porter, brewed with wild yeast cultured from Armand’s casks of lambic.

Here is a description from their website (www.3fonteinen.be):

Zwet.be, unusual “black” beer mixed gistingis is brewed with wheat, Maris Otter malt and cara malt.

Specifically, the mixed fermentation, yeast culture on the one hand from the Beersel Blonde, other lambic yeast. The lambic, brewed by Armand Debelder, a specific type of Brettanomyces geïsolleerd. This yeast gives this beer of 7% alc. volume slightly tart finish.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.3fonteinen.be

Twitter:  @3Fonteinen

In the end, I hope this would be my last beer on the planet.  This is amazing sipping beer.  I am a huge porter fan and I have not really been a fan of Belgian beers.  This beer is in my top five list of best porters ever had so far in my life.  This porter has everything that will make the Belgian fans happy and non Belgian fans happy.  There is the dark chocolate to tart notes.  This is dark chocolate cover fruit because of the tart.  I am pretty speechless on what to say about Zwet.be.  It just tells you how much I liked this beer.  I will say this just because I like this beer.  It does not mean you will like it too.  I would keep an open mind and draw your own thought pattern.  This is great beer and I highly highly HIGHLY recommend you trying this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!
