New Beer Blog Founders Brewing Sumatra Mountain Brown Ale

In this beer blog, we are going to sample another beer from Founders Brewing.  It is their Sumatra Mountain Brown Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Michigan base craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Midwest craft brewery.  Let us get into this brown ale.

It has a cloudy dark brown color with a tan constant head. The smell has a heavy coffee notes. The taste profile of this brown ale has a smooth nutty to coffee notes with a smooth slight milky coffee notes aftertaste. It is drinkable and scary because it is a 9% ABV beer.

Sumatra Mountain Brown

This bold, imperial brown ale gets its body from a team of malts including Caramel malt for sweetness, flaked barley for dense foam, a bit of Chocolate malt for its deep color and Aromatic and Munich malts to add even more depth. German and Perle hops add a touch of bitterness to balance the malty sweetness. Closing, I was pretty speechless when trying this beer.  I was really impressed.  I felt like Founder’s Brewery was just staying in their way.  Not really doing anything new and different.  While new and upcoming craft breweries in the state were starting to take from them.  I am glad to see them doing new and different things but take their time putting it out.  There are other breweries that are living on their name and need to step up to the plate.  I am not going to say who they are.  This is a solid coffee brown ale.  This has to be my favorite or close to favorite coffee brown ale.  Great beer with a great price point in a four pack bottle.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Founders Azacca India Pale Ale

In this beer blog, we are going to sample a new seasonal beer from Founders Brewery.  It is called Azacca India Pale Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Midwest craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Michigan base craft brewery.  Let us get into this IPA.

It has a clear copper color with a white constant head. The aroma has a tropical to mango like notes. The taste has a heavy mango to tropical notes. I can pick up some passion fruit in there. The aftertaste has a dry tropical notes. It is a nice drinkable beer.

Named for the Haitian god of agriculture, the Azacca hop boasts intense, tropical fruit notes. Azacca IPA includes a touch of caramel malt to provide a sweet backbone to the citrus, mango and orchard fruit notes in this 7% ABV, 70 IBUs beer. The label artwork symbolizes the god of agriculture watching over a field where the ingredients used to make the beer are being grown.

Ending, Azacca Hop is the new trending hop to use in your beer today.  You will find this hop mainly in IPA’s.  I would not be shocked to see someone use it in a pale ale or session IPA.  I am a huge fan of Tropical fruits.  I am due to go to the fruit store to buy some mango, passion fruit, or star fruit.  I love this hop just like most of the tropical hop types.  There is a nice balance to this beer.  Plus, the hop is not overly bitter like most hops in IPA’s.  It is a nice drinkable beer and I love it.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Founders Backwoods Bastard Ale (2014)

In this special beer blog, we are going to sample a special limited beer, which is Backwoods Bastard Ale, from Founders Brewery.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Midwest Craft Brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Michigan craft brewery.  Let us get into this beer.

It has a nice dark ruby-red color without a head on this barrel aged ale. The aroma has a sweet malty to slight bourdon along with some vanilla and other earthly notes. The taste has a sweet malty, alcohol, and earthly notes. The aftertaste has a nice warm alcohol finish. It is a nice sipping beer.

Expect lovely, warm smells of single malt scotch, oaky bourbon barrels, smoke, sweet caramel and roasted malts, a bit of earthy spice, and a scintilla of dark fruit. It’s a kick-back sipper made to excite the palate.

In the end, I kept on hearing this is the beer that you need to try from a Michigan craft brewery.  It is a must find and try.  When I hear it was released, I rushed out and found a few bottles.  I was pretty excited this beer.  I love ales aged in barrels.  I am a huge fan of old ales, wheat wines, and barley wines.  I have said it is a nice sipping beer.  I love the sweet malty to alcohol notes.  There is a pretty nice balance.  I have to say for the price and I was looking for more out of this beer.  I just believe it is not worth it.  I will get at least a bottle every year but I am not going out of my way like I did this year.  It is beyond overrated.  Let me put it this way.  It is very good beer but not the best in this beer style that I have had in my lifetime.  If you see it, try it.  I would love to hear your thoughts.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Founders Nitro Oatmeal Stout

Founders Brewery is the featured craft brewery in this beer blog.  We will be looking at one of three draft only beers and it is nitro draft from Founder’s.  It is their Nitro Oatmeal Stout. If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Michigan craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this craft brewery.  Let us get into this Nitro Oatmeal Stout.

It has a jet black color with tan color head.  The aroma has a chocolate and coffee notes. The taste has a creamy chocolate to slight coffee notes. There is a slight burn notes that also echoes in the taste and aftertaste.  It is pretty drinkable beer.

In the end, I was out on a NFL Football Sunday to watch my Miami Dolphins.  I saw this on draft and it was a slam dunk to try it and drink it.  I also noticed it was hooked up to a Nitro line.  Nitro makes everything good but not every beer.  It was pretty excited to try this beer.  It was not too bad but it is pretty average.  I will have to say it is so much better than Summit Brewery Oatmeal Stout.  This is a pretty average beer but it is pretty than some of their everyday beers.  Just because it is made in Michigan, it does not make it good.  This is better than most Michigan craft brews.  I highly recommend this beer.  I had this one at One Under Bar in Livonia.  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Founders Harvest Ale Wet-Hopped Ale (2014)

In this special beer blog, we are going to get into another limited release beer known as Harvest Ale from Founders.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Midwest craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know Founders Brewery.  Let us get into this beer.

It has a clear golden color with a constant white head.  The smell has a citrus to piney notes.  The taste has a piney, citrus, and a slight tropical notes. It is light and refreshing beer with a nice crisp hop finish for the aftertaste.  The hop aftertaste hangs but it disappears. It is a pretty drinkable wet hop ale.

In the end,  I love this beer. This is by far the best product that they make.  I really love this wet hopped ale.  They picked some nice hops and build a nice malty backbone.  There is some nice packaging.  I also love the color and presentation of this ale.  This is a beer if they can pull it off.  It should be all year-long but I get why it is not because it is the harvesting of the hops that makes beer special.  I really like this beer and I will have a few more before the end of the season.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Founders Dark Penance Imperial Black IPA

In this beer blog, we are going to get into Dark Penance Imperial Black IPA from Founders Brewery.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Michigan craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to Founders.  Let us get into this Black IPA.

It has a jet black color with a semi on tan color head.  The smell has a burn chocolate to coffee and citrus notes. The taste has a a creamy chocolate citrus notes with a dry hoppy to roasted chocolate aftertaste.  It is a sipping beer.

A heavy malt foundation includes Crystal malt for sweetness and just enough Midnight Wheat malt to push the color to black. The bitterness is huge, but balanced by malt sweetness and alcohol burn. The hop flavors and aromas range from citrus to floral to pine thanks to a delicious blend of hand-selected Chinook and Centennial hops.

Closing, I enjoyed this beer very much.  I just wished it was everyday six-pack brew.  They did a great job on this brew.  I love the creamy chocolate citrus notes.  It is in your face but smooth unlike most black IPA.  It is like they used stout base to make this Black IPA.  Most craft breweries use a porter base to make their Black IPA.   There is a nice balance to this beer, however, it is still a sipping beer.  The aroma and color are spot on to the beer style.  This makes you want to try the beer and enjoy it.  I realize the cost but I wish they made more of this beer. I am not a fan of the price but I wanted to try it.  I am glad that I did.  This is their best beer that they make.  It is a shame that it is not everyday beer.  I highly recommend you go out on a beer hunt for it.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/
