New Beer Blog Sierra Nevada Vienna Lager

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another brew, which is Vienna Lager, from Sierra Nevada’s new Fall Sampler Pack.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this west coast craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this craft brewery.  Let us get into this lager.

It has a clear dark golden to light copper color with a white constant head.  The smell has some shunky notes.  The taste has a malty to light shunky notes with a nutty finish for the aftertaste.  It is a drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

Vienna-style lagers were on the brink of extinction until American craft brewers helped revive the style.  It’s a good thing they did.  These delicate beers lean on light and bready malt flavors, but walk a fine, balanced line with whole-come European hope contributing a dry finish.

Here is a description from their website (www.sierranevada.com):

Vienna

The quintessential amber lager revisited.

Vienna-style beers are among the world’s first light-colored lagers and were on the brink of extinction until American craft brewers helped revive the style; it’s a good thing they did. These delicate and extremely balanced amber beers rely on semi-sweet and bready malt flavors but walk a fine line with both malt and hop character shouldering equal weight. Our take on the style features whole-cone European hops, which add to the dry finish.

Closing, I enjoyed drinking this beer and I will pick up their fall pack for the Oktoberfest and their Autumn Brown Ale.  Just like those other two beers, this is the only way you can get these beers.  It is a nice perfect beer for the fall pack.  I just do not know how their Pale Ale fits with all this malty love going on this pack.  It is kind of two different beer drinkers.  Most people who buy these sampler packs are taking them to parties or tailgate parties.  I honestly think this brewery can brew just about every style.  I highly recommend this beer and the sampler pack.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

Here is a description  from the beer bottle:

Here is a description from their website (www.sierranevada.com):

TumblerRoasted, rich, and perfect for an autumn afternoon.

Closing, I love this beer and I wish I could get it in a 12pk again.  I love Flipside but it is not like Tumbler Brown.  It is a nice relaxing beer to have in a nice fall day.  It is not overly dry malt to nutty notes.  It has a nice balance that you can enjoy it during the Saturday or Sunday football games.  This brown ale can fit perfectly with any tailgating food.  They kept this true to the classic beer style.  There is nothing more to say but it is a great beer.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest (2014)

image

In this fall beer blog, we are going to get into Oktoberfest that I did not know that Sierra Nevada Brewery made.  This beer came out of their new Fall Sampler Pack twelve pack bottles.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this west coast brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know Sierra Nevada Brewery.  Let us get into this Oktoberfest.

It has a reddish-brown color with slightly off-color white head.  The aroma has a sweet malty, toffee to nutty notes.  The taste has a sweet malty to nutty notes with a slight burned caramel notes for the aftertaste.  It is pretty drinkable fall beer.

Here is a desecration from the beer bottle:

Everyone loves a great party, and there are few quite as famous as Germany’s Oktoberfest.  Inspired by that rollicking celebration, we bring you our version of this classic festival beer.  Oktoberfest is medium bodied and rich with malt flavor, but maintains a crisp finish marked by floral hops.

Here is a description from their website (www.sierranevada.com):

Oktoberfest

Our take on the classic, malty festival beer.

Germany’s Oktoberfest celebrated a royal marriage and the health of the fall harvest—which in Bavaria, means brewers, barley and hops! Today, Oktoberfest is considered one of the world’s greatest parties, and in honor of that rollicking bash we bring you our version of the classic festival beer. Oktoberfest is medium-bodied and rich with bready and toffee-like malt flavor but maintains a crisp finish marked by floral and spicy hops.

Closing, I love this brewery and I hope one day to make a trip to see this craft brewery.  They make some awesome beers and I am always looking for any and all new beers to hit the market.  I never had one bad beer from this west coast craft brewery.  I was happy to see them put out a sampler packs.  They released their 4-way IPA, Beer Camp, and now this one, which is Fall Pack.  This Oktoberfest keeps the awesome season roll going for the fall beers.   I have to say this is my favorite Oktoberfest.  It is not like Goose Island and Great Lakes Oktoberfest where it has a sweet caramel notes.  This one has a sweet malty notes to nutty but I love the aftertaste, which is like a burned caramel notes.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Alaskan Pumpkin Porter (2014)

image

In this fall beer blog, we are going to sample a brewery new to Michigan.  It is Alaskan Pumpkin Porter.   If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Northwest craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this craft brewery.  Let us get into this pumpkin porter.

It has a jet black color with a nice tan head on this porter.  The aroma has hints of cinnamon and nutmeg notes.  The taste has a light chocolate to cinnamon and nutmeg with a smokey malty aftertaste.  It is drinkable beer for a porter.

Here is a desecration from their website (www.alaskanbeer.com):

Style:

A native plant of North America, pumpkins were first used in beer in colonial America as a substitute for hard-to-find malt, and none other than the father of our country George Washington had a highly touted recipe. This imperial porter pumpkin beer combines the robust, full-bodied style of a porter with a, frankly, crazy amount of pumpkin.

Taste Style:

With over 11 pounds of pumpkin added to every barrel of this imperial porter, this beer has a smooth, velvety rich texture. Brown sugar, holiday spices and a scoche of Alaskan’s famous alder-smoked malt are added to create an aroma and flavor reminiscent of grandma’s Thanksgiving pumpkin pie.

History:

This is the first bottling of our Alaskan Pumpkin Porter, after a highly sought-after holiday Rough Draft release in Alaska. This Alaskan Brewing take on a colonial American tradition is perfect for autumn and Thanksgiving, as here in Alaska we see the nights get longer and colder and can find comfort in the richness of this brew.

Ingredients:

Alaskan Pumpkin Porter is made from our glacier-fed water and a blend of Magnum and Goldings hops, 6 different malts including Alaskan alder-smoked malt, brown sugar, and a spice blend including cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves. Plus, of course, Red Hubbard variety pumpkin.

Story Behind The Label:

Alaska is home to some of the world’s largest cultivated vegetables, squashes, gourds and pumpkins. The long daylight hours in the summer promote fast growth, and also prompt fierce competition amongst the farmers of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, who converge on the Alaska State Fair with their gigantic prize produce in the quest to be crowned State Fair champion. It is a common sight at the fairgrounds in Palmer to see a pickup truck barely able to contain the huge pumpkins they haul to the competition, which can weigh in at more than 1,200 pounds.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.alaskanbeer.com

Twitter:  @alaskanbeer

Closing, Yay!  This is my first Pumpkin Porter of the season.  I am glad it is coming from one of my favorite breweries out west.  There is a nice balance between from the porter and pumpkin.  To me, I found this beer taste like a chocolate cover pumpkin with some cinnamon and nutmeg notes.  It is a sipping beer but perfect for the fall and winter seasonal.  I can see many beer drinkers drink this beer after fall is over.  This is a great and well designed beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Alaskan Icy Bay IPA

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into the second beer from Alaskan Brewery.  It is their Icy Bay IPA.  This is a newer beer from them.  I had their regular IPA a few years back.  I loved it along with their Black IPA. If you read my earlier beer blog from a few days ago, you know the history of this craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read it to get to know this craft brewery from Alaska.  Let us get into this IPA.

It has a clear copper color with a white constant head.  The smell has a slight citrus notes.  The taste has a citrus notes with a dry hop finish for the aftertaste.  It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is a description from their website (www.alaskanbeer.com):

Style:

India Pale Ales are characterized by intense hop flavor and aroma accompanied with medium maltiness and body while also being crisp and dry.

Flavor Profile:

Alaskan Icy Bay IPA is made from glacier-fed water and a blend of Cascade, Bravo, Calypso, Summit and Apollo hops and premium two-row pale and specialty malts.

History:

India Pale Ale is a style of ale originally derived from a colonial thirst for British-brewed beers. By initially brewing the beer to high specific gravities it could continue to ferment during the journey to British colonies. Larger amounts of hops were also added for their preservative properties and resulted in a golden beer with a hoppy flavor.

Ingredients:

Alaskan Icy Bay IPA is made from glacier-fed water and a blend of Summit, Apollo and Cascade hops and premium two-row pale and specialty malts. Our water originates in the 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice Field and from more than 90 inches of rainfall each year.

The Story Behind The Label:

The surfers who ride the waves around Yakutat and Icy Bay have to be prepared for all of the extremes that come with Alaska’s maritime climate. That can mean air temperatures well below freezing, and water temperatures not too much higher. It’s sometimes called blue face surfing, and it requires a special breed of adventurer to seek out the rugged shorelines that yield the best breaks.

Alaskan Icy Bay IPA comes from the heritage of a beer brewed to endure the long ocean journey from England to India, with a bold taste, brisk bitter bite, and a citrus hoppy aroma. For the surfers who venture into the cold waters of Icy Bay, it’s a beer to match the intensity of a remote ride on a wave breaking on a solitary Alaskan beach.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.alaskanbeer.com

Twitter:  @alaskanbeer

Ending, I am so happy to see this craft brewery in Michigan.  I had a rock show on a Friday at Freedom Hill.  I will be enjoying some Alaskan at the tailgate.  This IPA is just right.  It makes me happy as a Hophead, however, it will bring some border line IPA drinkers over.  This will bring new drinkers to the IPA beer style.  It has a nice mild and refreshing brew that makes you coming back for more. The malty backbone has a nice bite to fight against the over the top hoppy notes. This is a great IPA and welcome to Michigan.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

In closing, I am pretty happy to see them finally make it to Michigan.  I am been a huge of this craft brewery for a long time.  I am loving the fact that I get to try all the newer beers and favorites.  I am happy I do not have to trade with anyone out west. I am happy to walk into my beer store and get this craft brewery.  I am a huge fan of PA and APA.  I was pretty interested in this beer. I love hop aroma and taste of the tropical fruit notes.  This is a great and balance beer.  It is pretty drinkable and refreshing.  This is one beer you can have it any part of the season.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Tampa is a long way from our home base in Chico, but the guys down yonder in Florida sure can brew a great beer. Our friends at Cigar City find inspiration in the Cuban roots of their hometown, and that Latin-inspired flair is evident in Yonder Bock. This tropical take on the Maibock adds a Latin island flair to this traditional German style beer.

Enamored with the Latin roots of their Tampa home, Cigar City always tries to channel a bit of local history into their beers, e.g. the Humidor Series whose beers age on Spanish cedar as an homage to Tampa’s cigar making roots. Only five years old, this brewery deserves the fast praise that’s come its way.

image

In this special beer blog, we are going to get into the eleventh of twelve beers from Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp.  This one is teamed up with Victory Brewery and it is their Alt Route Altbier.  If you read earlier beer blog posts on both breweries, you know both craft breweries.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know these two great breweries.  Let us get into Altbier.

Breweries are notorious for refusing to take the easy path.  Alt Route is a tribute to this stubborn spirit that drove us to dodge the status quo and build breweries of our own.  Together we chased the siren song of beer with this revamped take on an antique beer styles.

Here is a description from  their website (www.beercamp.sierranevada.com):

Brewers are notorious for refusing to take the easy path. Instead, we lead with our hearts and pursue our passions no matter how difficult the road ahead. Alt Route is a tribute to this stubborn spirit that drove us to dodge the status quo and found breweries. Together we chased the siren song of beer with this revamped take on an antique beer style.

Like us, Victory is one of the few brewers with an allegiance to whole-cone hops. They do extensive work with hop flavor, especially focusing on clever and delicious single-hop beers highlighting the same hop grown in different regions. They too share our roots in home brewing and never lost their passion for working with new beers and styles solely for the joy of making something new.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.victorybeer.com and www.sierranevada.com

Twitter:  @victorybeer and @sierranevada

In the end, I was pretty excited to see this beer style in this pack.  This is one of my favorite German beer styles and then it is coming from Victory.  What else is there to say, I am pretty stun that I did not pick this beer up first.  I figured I would save this beer to the end.  I love the color of the beer and the aroma.  However, the taste was great, I was thrown by the citrus notes throughout the drinking experience.  It just took me off guard.  I do not know how I feel about it.  I did get use to it towards the end.  This beer is a great example that should be feature in this pack.  I like it towards the end.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Firestone Walker Brewing Torpedo Pilsner

image

In this special beer blog, we are going to get into this tenth of twelve beers from Sierra Nevada Beer Camp.  This Pilsner is teamed by Firestone Walker Brewery and it is their Torpedo Pilsner Hoppy Pilsner.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts from both of these West Coast craft breweries, you know the history of both of them.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know Firestone Walker and Sierra Nevada Brewery.  Let us get into this Pilsner.

This Hoppy Pilsner has a light golden to straw color with a constant white head.  The aroma has a light earthy to sweet malty notes.  The taste has a sweet malty to earthy tones with a dry hoppy crisp finish.  It is extremely drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

This hoppy lager features intense fruity and floral notes from fresh New Zealand hops balanced against a crisp and clean malt body.

Torpedo Pilsner is a hop-forward take on the crisp, classic lager.  We and the folks at Firestone Walker share a passion for New Zealand hop varietals, so we loaded our legendary Hop Torpedo with the southern hemisphere’s finest hops for a fruity, floral twist on the pilsner style.

Here is a description from their website (www.beercamp.sierranevada.com):

Torpedo Pilsner is a hop-forward take on the crisp classic lager. We and the folks at Firestone Walker share a passion for New Zealand hop varietals, so we loaded our legendary Hop Torpedo with southern hemisphere hops for a fruity, floral twist on the pilsner style.

Just down the road from us in California’s Central Coast wine country, this rock star brewery has earned “Mid-size Brewery of the Year” at the World Beer Cup four times. Like us, Firestone is passionate about hops. Their skill with the ingredient shines in their Pale Series and elsewhere in a long beer lineup driven by a premier brewing team.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

In the end, I am still looking for an awesome pilsner and/or lager from a craft brewery.  Does it take two craft breweries to delivery one?  I hate to say it but these two great breweries were almost there.  I believe it is the hop selection.  I am looking for a traditional or classic pislner and lager.  This one does not delivery it, however, it does give me something different.  I like that.  The hops that they picked gives off some tropical fruit notes.  I am in love those hops from New Zealand.  Both of these breweries did a great job on this beer.  I will keep searching for a great traditional and classic lager or pislner style.  If you can find a pack, do it.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Allagash Brewing Myron’s Walk BPA

image

In this special beer blog, we are going to get into the ninth of twelve of beer from this Sierra Nevada Beer Camp.  This Myron’s Walk BPA is teamed up with Allagash Brewery.  If you read my earlier beer blog from Sierra Nevada, you know the history of this West Coast craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to this craft brewery. Allagash Brewery started in 1995 in Portland, Maine.  Robert Tod founded this craft brewery to make some great Belgian style ales.  At first, this brewery was ran by Robert and he hired his first employee.  At that same time, he released his second beer to the public.  Today, they brew several different beer styles with more employees of course.  Let us get into the Belgian Pale Ale.

It has a clear golden color with a semi white constant head on this BPA.  The smell has a citrus with other Belgian spicy notes.  The taste of this light to medium body has a light carbonation piney to a slight earthy notes.  The aftertaste is a slight hoppy bitter finish.  It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

This Belgian-style pale ale combines the best of our two breweries.  Intense piney-citrus hop notes counterpoint the complex fruity spice of Allagash’s Belgian yeast.

This collaboration honors Myron Avery, a founder of the Appaiachian Trail which spans our North Carolina brewery and Allasgash’s home in Maine.  We share a great love of the outdoors, and Avery and the AT are great reminders of the wild spirit of exploration that connects us both.

Here is a description from their website (www.beercamp.sierranevada.com):

We named this beer in honor of Myron Avery, a founder of the Appalachian Trail, or the A.T., which starts near Sierra Nevada’s North Carolina brewery and ends near Allagash’s home in Maine. Both breweries have a tremendous love of the outdoors, and Avery and the A.T. are great reminders of the wild spirit of exploration that connects us both.

In 1995, Rob Tod started Allagash Brewing Company and since then, Portland, ME, has been a place of reverence in the Belgian brewing pantheon. Allagash adds their Belgian flair to variety of beer styles and are one of the few American breweries to use a traditional coolship for true spontaneous fermentations leading to seriously complex beers native to their coastal home.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.allagash.com and www.sierranevada.com

Twitter:  @allagashbrewing and @sierranevada

In the end, out of the two Belgian Beer styles, this is by far the best one.  I have not had too many beers from Allagash Brewery but the ones that I had. They are pretty good and enjoyed them.  I have to say I was pretty excited to try this beer.  I love the Belgian spices and the hop character that this beer has going on in it.  It has a nice refreshing taste that keeps the beer drinker coming back for more of it.  I really liked it and it is one of many reasons to pick up this pack or try to find one.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/
