New Beer Blog Brau Brothers Brewery Alternative Imperial Alt

image

In this beer blog, we are going to sample Alternative Imperial Alt from Brau Brothers Brewery for the first time on this blog.  There is not much history on this brewery.  I do know they are from Marshall, Minnesota.  They seem like a younger craft brewery.  Let us get into this Alt.

It has a nice cloudy dark brown color with a nice constant tan color head. The aroma has a sweet malty, candy, and alcohol notes. The taste has a sweet malty to alcohol notes with sweet alcohol aftertaste. It is a sipping beer.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Closing, I went into my local craft beer store and saw this on the shelf.  I was pretty curious.  I love Alts but imperial alt.  Oh my god!  I had to pick up a bottle.  This beer is a great brew for some of these winter days here in Michigan.  I love the alcohol notes.  There is some nice sweet malty notes.  I went back to the store and I did not see it.  I did not see it on their website.  I believe this is an in and out brew.  They did a great job on this beer.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Brooklyn Brewery Blast Ale

image

In this beer blog, we are going to sample a brew that I have been searching for the last few years.  I even tried to trade with a friend on the east coast.  He could not find it last year.  I believe he did not want to share.  I am talking about Brooklyn Blast Ale, which is Double IPA.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this east coast craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know Brooklyn Brewery.  Let us get into this Double IPA.

It has a slightly cloudy copper color with a white head on this double IPA. The smell has a citrus notes that shines strong in this brew. The taste has a strong malty backbone that let the citrus notes shine bright in this ale.  The aftertaste has a dry hop finish. It is a nice sipping beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

We brew our beer in New York, about halfway between the hop fields of the Pacific Northwest and the hop fields of Kent, England.  So in The rambuncious IPA we call BLAST! we use earthly English hops to build the foundation and bright citrusy American hops to bring the noise.  British and German malts brace up a beer that’s beautifully hoppy, strangely quaffable and oddly compelling.  You won’t even know what hit you.

Here is a description from their website (www.brooklynbrewery.com):

We brew our beer in New York, about halfway between the hop fields of the Pacific Northwest and the hop fields of Kent, England. So we use earthy English hops to build the foundation and bright citrusy American hops to bring the noise in the rambunctious IPA we call BLAST! British Maris Otter and German Pilsner malts lends solidity, balance and bready flavors to brace up a beer that’s beautifully hoppy, strangely quaffable and oddly compelling. Minerally hop bitterness is followed by a shock wave of flavor and aroma. You won’t even know what hit you.

Closing,  I am not a huge fan of Brooklyn Brewery but I respect them from where they were and what they have done so far.  They brew more of the traditional beer styles.  It is fine.  I love their Pilsner and Brown ale in their everyday line up.  I was pretty happy to see Blast! as an everyday beer.  It is a smart move with the growth of IPA’s.  I love it. There is a nice balance and does not drink like a double IPA.  This is what makes beer pretty special.  This is one of their best beers asides their chocolate stout.  I highly recommend.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Hoppy Lager (2015)

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into the new spring seasonal from Sierra Nevada Brewery.  Their Ruthless Rye takes a step asides as it enters the 4-Way IPA Sampler pack.  The beer that is being featured is their Beer Camp Hoppy Lager.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this west coast craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this craft brewery legend.  Let us get into this Lager.

This Lager has a clear golden color with a constant white head. The aroma is really faded to non existed. The taste has a hoppy to slight and light malt notes. The aftertaste has a dry hop bitter finish. It is extremely drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

This hop-heavy beer combines intense citrus and floral hop flavors with the clean, classic malt body of a hearty blonde lager for a crisp but aggressive take on the India Style Pale Lager.

Last summer we teamed up with San Diego’s Ballast Point for a hop-head twist on a crisp lager.  We remixed this encore which is loaded with whole-cone hops in the brew kettle and in our Hop Torpedo to deliver a bold aroma backed by smooth malt flavor

Here is a description from their website (www.sierranevada.com):

Beer Camp® Hoppy Lager

A hop-heavy twist on the classic blonde lager.

Beer Camp is the ultimate brewing experience. We bring beer fans into our brewery nearly every week to create their own beer with us—the more daring the better—and each spring we’ll highlight one of the small-batch standouts. Last year, Beer Camp worked overtime. Along with our fan brews, we made 12 additional beers with 12 exceptional breweries. Choosing one for an encore wasn’t easy. Ever drawn to hops, we decided to reimagine our hoppy lager collaboration with Ballast Point.

Bitter vs. Hoppy

There is a general misconception regarding the bitterness of beer versus how hoppy a beer tastes. A beer’s IBU number is based on a measurement of how much bitter hop acid is in the packaged beer. Hoppiness on the other hand, is a relative thing and can’t be put into numbers. If both bitterness and hoppiness come from adding hops to beer, how can bitterness and hoppiness be disconnected?
Bitterness comes from adding hops to the kettle. There, the boiling process causes a chemical change in the hops (isomerization) which allows the resinous acids to mix with the liquid without separating out. Adding hops to the kettle after the boiling has stopped or adding hops into the fermenter (such as in dry hopping or our hop torpedo process) allows hop oils to mix with the beer—the source of most of the hop flavor and aroma—without adding bitterness. A beer can be hoppy but not bitter, and vice versa, but looking only at IBU doesn’t give a good measure of the hop flavor in a finished beer.

Ale versus Lager

All beer is broken down into two camps: ale or lager. The principal difference is the variety of yeast. Ales use a yeast called Saccharomyces cerevisiae, referred to as “top fermenting” because of the frothy foam created during fermentation. Lagers use a yeast called Saccharomyces pastorianus, called “bottom fermenting” because of the slower, restrained fermentation process. Ales are fermented at warmer temperatures and generally produce more fruity and spicy aromas from the yeast. Lagers are fermented at cooler temperatures and produce cleaner, more reserved aromas, which let the malt and hops shine through.

Dry HopsWe work hard to get strong hop flavors into our beers and one of the ways we do that is through dry hopping. Dry hopping refers to the addition of whole-cone hops to the fermentation tanks. The addition of hops to cold beer allows the aromatic oils and resins to infuse the beer with flavor and aroma without adding any additional bitterness.

In the end, I knew going through the Beer Camp Sampler pack that this brew or one of those beers would become an everyday or seasonal brew from Sierra Nevada.  I enjoyed  that IPL.  I am happy that I can get it for the whole spring season now.  I love it. It is a very drinkable.  This beer has a nice balance from the hops but with a nice crisp and clean finish.  This beer is perfect for the hopheads in the world but it will get some lager heads looking and trying this brew.  They might like it. I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Dark Horse Brewing Edacsac Dekoorc Eert IPA

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a special beer from Dark Horse Brewing.  It is their Edacsa Dekoorc Eert IPA.  It is Crooked Tree Cascade spelled backwards.  This beer was one of the special single hop IPA’s that was made for a sampler pack.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Michigan craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know Dark Horse Craft Brewery.  Let us get into this IPA.

It has a cloudy and unfiltered copper color with a white constant head.  There is not any aroma.  The taste has a light citrus notes with a dry hop bitter aftertaste. It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.darkhorsebrewery.com

Twitter:  @darkhorsebrewco

In the end, I have always been interested in single hop IPA’s.  I do not care what craft brewery that it comes from or make it.  I will try these beers again and again.  I am idiot for these experiment and single hop IPA’s.  This one was pretty unique because it came out of IPA sampler pack.  This is the new trend for craft brewery to make sampler IPA packs.  I believe that it started with Widmer Brothers or Boston Beer Company.  This brew from Dark Horse Brewing has a nice balance and the cascade hops shine through this beer.  I enjoyed drinking and I wish I could get this as a six-pack for a value price. It is a great beer but not a normal craft IPA price in any market.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Abita Brewery Wrought Iron IPA

image

Abita Brewery Wrought Iron IPA is the feature brew in this beer blog.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this southern craft brewery.  If you have not read them, please, do so to get to know Abita Brewery.  Let us get into this IPA.

It has a cloudy copper color with a white constant head. The aroma has a heavy citrus notes. The taste has a citrus notes. I can pick up the Equinox and Mosaic hops. The aftertaste has a dry hop bitter finish. It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

Abita Wrought Iron IPA embodies the resilient, indestructible nature of New Orleans.  This india pale ale is forged with the intensity of Apollo, Equinox, and Mosaic Hops.  Brewed with pale ale malt for a golden color as bright an iron from a fiery forge.

Here is a description from their website (www.abita.com):

Wrought Iron® IPA pairs well with grilled meats like steaks or pork chops. Grilled sausages are great too, with some spicy mustard on the side. It also pairs well with the spice, meat and seafood in jambalaya. A mild goat cheese is an excellent choice with Wrought Iron® IPA.

Suggested temperature: 44°
Suggested glasswarepint, tulip, or stein

Closing, I was pretty excited to see this on the shelf.  I did not know they put out a new IPA.  Of course, I had to do a little research on this brew.  I thought it was a season but it is everyday.  There is some nice packaging on this beer.  I have to say this was the best packaging as far as the labels on the bottle from them.  There is some nice notes in the aroma.  I love the hops they picked for this beer.  Some of the hottest hops in the craft beer world are being used in this brew.  This is so much better than their other everyday IPA.  It is a good brew.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Fish Tale Ales The Hobbit Smaug Stout

image

In this beer blog, we are going to sample another brew from Fish Tale Ales.  It is their The Hobbit Smaug Stout.  This is the second one of three that I have had a chance to review on this blog.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their Tripel, you know the history of this Northwest craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read it to get to know this craft brewery.  Let us get into this Stout.

It has a jet black color with a tan color head on this imperial stout. The smell has a chocolate to coffee notes. The taste has a chocolate to coffee notes with slight chili pepper burn finish for the aftertaste. It is a sipping beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

The Dragon Smaug

After escaping capture by the dangerous Woodland Elves, and Dwarves journey to Laketown, and finally to the Lonely Mountain itself, where they must face the greatest danger of all – a creature more terrifying than any before, which will test not only the depth of their courage, but the friendship and the wisdom of the journey itself – the Dragon Smaug

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.fishbrewing.com

Twitter:  @FishBrewing

Closing, I did not know there was three of these.  I picked up the tripel by mistake but I am glad I had it.  I did write-up a review on it a few days ago.  Please, go check it out if you are interested what I think of that brew.  I had to do a little hunting for this brew and I am so happy that I found it. What I like about this beer, the hot peppers did not over taking the brew.  There is a nice balance but the hot peppers do start to get hotter the more and more that you drink this brew.  It is an average brew.  This is the best of the three in the series.  I did not have the Pils.  I do not think that I will be trying that brew.  I recommend this brew.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Ommegang Games Of Thrones Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into the next installment of the Games Of Thrones from Ommegang Brewery.  It is Valar Morghulis Dubbel Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this east coast craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this craft brewery.  Let us get into this Dubbel ale.

It has a cloudy amber color with a constant tan color head. The smell has a sweet malty to candy notes. The taste has a sweet malty to candy notes. The aftertaste has a sweet malty to slight alcohol finish. It is pretty drinkable beer.

image

Here is a description from their website (www.ommegang.com):

Tasting Notes

Valar Morghulis possesses a deep chestnut brown color with a persistent and creamy tan head. Rich aromas of caramel, toffee, ripe fruits and burnt sugar, with a hint of cloves. The taste is delicately balanced with rich malty sweetness, caramel and just enough bitterness to balance out its malty backbone. A surprisingly dry finish is light on the tongue, which belies the initial aroma.

  • Malt: Our carefully crafted mixture of specialty malts.
  • Sugar: Dark Candi
  • Hops: Apollo, Hallertau Spalt
  • Spices: None
  • ABV: 8.0%
  • Available on draft and in 750ml bottles.

Pair with savory dishes, roasted lamb or beef, marinated roasts and grilled venison. Strong cheeses such as Stilton, Gorgonzola and smoked cheddar will match well against the malty body.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.ommegang.com

Twitter:  @breweryommegang

In the end, I always get excited when these beers are released from Ommegang.  I love their beers but there are times when they put one out a beer that I just feel it is not worth the price.  The beer is good but not worth the price.  Overall, they make some killer beers.  This brew is really good and it will sell because of the Games Of Thrones.  It is kind like their Abbey. I just feel like it is missing something. It is a little different brew.  If you can find it, I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Sports Thought Thursday NFL Playoffs (2015)

In this Sports Thought Thursday blog, I know it is not Thursday and I forgot to write-up my prediction that I do every year.  Plus, I did not post the last two weeks on Thursday and Friday.  I figure the best time to post just before the games start.  Once again, another disappointing season for my Dolphins.  I guess next year will be different.  We will have to see.  Let us get into the match up for today Wild Card games and all the way up to the Super Bowl.

Wild Card

Game One Cardinals vs Panthers

I get it that NFC South was the weakest or strongest division in the league.  All the teams had a records below .500.  Panthers could become the second team to do this since 2010 Seashawks that beat New Orleans Saints.  It is kind of crazy the teams that loss and win came out of respected division.  Saints are from the NFC South like the Panters.  Seahawks came out of the NFC West like the Cardinals.  I am liking what I am seeing from Cam and the offense.  We all know their defense is really good.  Let us hope their special team does not disappoint them.  They should beat Cardinals with their third string quarterback.  Cardinals defense is still good but not what it was in beginning of the season.  If Cardinals offense get into some kind of rhythm, they will win this game.  I just do not see it happening.  Panthers should win this game.

Game Two Ravens vs Steelers

The Steelers are known for their defense throughout history.  This group is really good.  Ravens can play some defense also, however their secondary is pretty weak and I can see them having problems with Steelers wide receivers.  Both quarterbacks have won a Super Bowl and both of them know how to pass the ball around to our their receivers.  This is more important for the Steelers because their star running back Bell is already ruled out.  They signed Ben Tate.  They are looking at undrafted back Josh Harrison to pick up  that load.  It is going to be raining tonight and that is running game weather.  I believe it will come down to Big Ben arm.  He threw 12 touchdowns in two games this season.  With Bell out, he is their best back that can pass block.  This will affect their passing game.  Can he do it against the Ravens?  This is going to be one of the best games this playoffs.  I am going to say no but this game is going to overtime.  This is going to be a very close game and I have to go with Ravens even though they never beat them in the playoffs.  I still like Ravens.

Game Three Bengals vs Colts

I have to be honest on both of these teams.  I have not watched too many games of either team.  I know AJ Green is believed to be hurt and Andy may realize that it is the playoffs.  He forgets how to play.  I do not believe the Colts have a running game nor defense.  This is going to be a very important game for the coaching staff of the Bengals and Andy’s legacy as quarterback that can play in big games.  What the hell, I am going to pick Bengals.

Game Four Lions vs Cowboys

Cowboys has been the hottest team in the league just like the Settle Seahawks.  One of the best QBs, RBs, and WRs are in the game.  I believe Tony has finally found himself as NFL QB.  This is one of the best teams that he has had in his career.  I love their defense and we know Lions defense will show up.  They will have a pretty good game but will they be able to overcome the weakest part of their team.  I believe the Lions offense will keep their defense on the field a ton.  Lions offense has still not found themselves.  They have their former OC, who is Scott Linehan, that has been in defense meaning.  He is teaching their defense on what the Lions offense likes to in games.   The lucky bounces that Detroit Lions have been receiving this year will come to the end.  I cannot see the Lions finding their offense.  I can see the Cowboys coming out and winning this game easily.  I am picking the Cowboys.

Divisional Playoffs

Game One Patriots vs Ravens

Patriots at home again through out the playoffs and I cannot see them losing against the Ravens.  Sorry Ravens, this is a pretty easy pick and you had a great season.  Pats has this one and I hate to say it.

Game Two Cowboys  vs Packers

This is going to be a pretty interesting game.  I would love to see how the weather is going to be.  I am going on the fact that it is going be a normal weather for Green Bay.  This will come down to who has the better running game.  If it comes down to the passing game, Rodgers and Packers will win this game.  If the Cowboys keep Packers defense on the field longer, Dallas will be one win away from the Super Bowl.  I cannot that see that happening.  Packers will win this game.

Game Three Bengals vs Broncos

I saw a few games of the Broncos this season.  Manning is still good but getting really old fast.  He is better than average quarterback at his age.  He will pull out a win again the Bengals.  Broncos will win in front of their home crowd.

Game Four Panthers vs Seahawks

Here comes the 12th man.  I believe you will know how this will go down.  This will be a defensive game.  It is going to come down the field goal kickers.  I love both defenses.  I can Seattle’s defense coming out in the better end.  Seahawks has this game.

Conference Championships

Game One Broncos vs Patriots

This is the match up that we have seem so many throughout the years.  Brady vs Manning part whatever.  I do not believe in Pats defense.  It is good because of the their new-found running game.  I believe there is a way to play against their defense and offense.  I believe the Broncos OC and DC will find their way to find faults and attack.  I can Patriots looking really bad in this game.  Brady will do a last-minute drive down but come up short to send his team to the Super Bowl. Broncos will be back in the Super Bowl for back to back years.

Game Two Packers vs Seahawks

These two teams have a nice history in the last five years as for NFL moments.  I am loving the Seahawks.  They are on a fire and I cannot see Rodgers being health enough to escape from Hawks D-Line.  It will be close but Seahawks and 12th man are going back to the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl Broncos vs Seahawks

This will be the first back to back rematch since the 1993 and 1994 Dallas Cowboys vs Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowls.  This is a rematch from last year’s Super Bowl.  I believe this might be the last game for Lynch’s NFL career.  He has been hinting it all season.  He has a bad back and he will have a game that people will be talking about game to come.  Is this the last game for Manning?  Will he get back at Seattle for the game that we are still talking about from last year?  I cannot see any team beating Seattle’s defense.  I am talking about Patriots too.  Seashawks will go back to back Super Bowl Champs since the Patriots in 2004 and 2005!

In closing, I will do a write-up for my prediction of the Super Bowl during the bye-week.  I am pretty excited to watch these games.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Fish Tales Ales Hobbit Tripel

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a beer from Fish Brewing and it is Hobbit Tripel.  This brewery has team with the Hobbit The Movie to brew a series of beers.  Fish Brewing was founded in 1993 in Olympia, Washington.  There is not too much information on this brewery.  Let us get into beer.

It has a cloudy copper color with a white constant head on this special movie beer release. The smell has a Belgium species with orange coriander notes. The taste has a creamy orange coriander to Belgium species notes. The aftertaste is dry and crisp finish. It is a sipping beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

The Otc Bolg

The spawn of Azog the Defiler, Bolg, like his sire is a giant, plae Orc.  Keeper of the dungeons of Dol Guldur, Bolg takes pleasure in torture – his armor is embellished with the bones and blood of his victims.  Powerfully built, this Orc is afraid of nothing and no one – that is, until he comes up against a surpising foe.

Here is their website and twitter and addresses:

Website:  www.fishbrewing.com

Twitter:  @FishBrewing

In the end, this is not a new way of selling beer.  Beer and other products have been doing product placement in movies.  Now, TV series and movies are now teaming up with breweries to make a series of beers to support that project.  Ommegang has done an overall really great job on their beers for the Games Of Thrones.  I cannot think of any other examples of this situation.  I love my tripels or triples.  This beer is pretty average. I am not a huge fan of it. It is missing something and I do not know what it is.  I believe it will sell some bottles because it has the Hobbit logo on the bottle.  If you see the bottle, I would at least try it.  If you are a fan of the movies, you will be picking it up.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Dragon’s Milk Reserve With Raspberry

image

In this special beer blog, we are going to sample a special release from successful Dragon Milk Bourbon Barrel Stout Series from New Holland Brewery.  This time around they added raspberries to their milk stout.  If you have read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this midwest craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Michigan craft brewery.  Let us get into this milk stout.

It has a jet black color with a constant tan head on this special stout edition. The aroma has a heavy raspberry to slight chocolate notes. It smells like chocolate covered raspberries. The taste has a heavy raspberry with hints of chocolate and slight burn alcohol notes. There is a slight vanilla, oak, and bourbon notes. The aftertaste has a raspberry and burn alcohol notes.  It is a nice sipping beer.

Here is their description from the beer bottle:

This beer is from our collection of special variations that live in our Dragon’s Milk cellar.  Local raspberries were added to the barrels in the final stages of conditioning.  Raspberries lend depth, brightness and unique fruit character that harmonizes beautifully with Dragon’s Milk’s dark, roasty tones of malt, bourbon, and oak.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.newhollandbrew.com

Twitter:  @newhollandbrew

In the end, I am not really a huge fan of their Dragon’s Milk Stout.  I was pretty interested in how the raspberries would go with the bourdon barrel milk stout.  The color is your normal jet black color for a milk stout.  I am pretty much a fan of raspberries so I love aroma from this brew.  The taste is like a chocolate cover raspberries with some bourbon notes.  This is a great product and they did a great job on it.  I have to say this is one of my favorite brews from New Holland.  I highly recommend this  beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!
