New Beer Blog Smuttynose Brewing Old Brown Dog Ale

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a craft brewery, who is Smuttynose Brewing, that finally made it to Michigan beer market. We are going to get into one of their everyday brew, which is Old Brown Dog Ale. If you read my earlier beer blog post on their Winter Ale, you know the history of this Northeast craft brewery. If you have not, please, read it to get to know Smutty. Let us get into this English style brown ale.

It has a clear brown color with a tan color head on this brown ale. The head disappears over time. The aroma has some nutty notes. The taste has a sweet malty to nutty notes with a dry nutty aftertaste. It is pretty slight and crisp for the aftertaste. It is a pretty drinkable beer.

In closing, I am pretty excited to have this craft brewery in the Michigan market finally. I was a pretty big fan of their beers when I lived in the Chicago market. I am still a huge fan if theirs. This craft brewery is no joke. They are growing and looking to keep pushing themselves on their beers and knowledge. This is a classic English style brown ale. It has a beautiful color and appearance. There is some nice nutty aroma. The taste has some nice sweet malty notes that keeps you coming back, however, the aftertaste is pretty crisp unlike most brown ales. This is a well thought and built brew. They did a great job. This is second to Goose Island Nut Brown Ale. I have to say Brooklyn Brown Ale is up there too. I highly recommend this beer. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! Metal it! \m/

New Beer Blog Smuttynose Brewing Robust Porter

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another brew from Smuttynose Brewery. I am so glad they finally made it to the Michigan market. I now can have one of my favorite IPA back in my beer line up. If you have read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this east coast craft brewery. If you have not, please, read them to get to know Smuttynose Brewery. Let us get into this nice English Porter.

It has a jet black color with tan creamy looking head on this English style head. The smell has a chocolate to coffee notes. It also has a slight burn to roasted malty notes. The taste has a roasted chocolate to slight coffee notes. The aftertaste has a dry chocolate to coffee finish. It is kind of drinkable beer.

Closing, what I like about this beer, they did not do too much to it. They stayed in the true beer style and there is nothing wrong with that. This is an English style porter. It has a pretty color and appearance. I love the aroma notes this beer gives the beer drinker. This is a great beer. It is a nice and perfect brew in the coldest winter or fall days. I love it. New Beer Blog Speakeasy Double Daddy IPA

Speakeasy Brewery Double Daddy IPA is the next brew that is being featured in this beer blog. As many of you know, I have blogged on this brewery and I am huge fan of their brews. If you have not read those posts, please, read those beer posts to get to know this brewery. Let us get into another everyday brew from Speakeasy Brewery.

It has a deep dark copper color with a white constant head. The smell is a mango or tropical fruit to the beer. The taste is a carbonated mango without an aftertaste. It is drinkable beer.

Closing out, Double Daddy is not a joke and you should not mess with this dude. They took their Big Daddy IPA to the next level. If you are a fan of their everyday six-pack IPA, you will love this Imperial IPA. There is a nice balance between the hops and malt unlike most Imperial India Pale Ales on the market. I would put this up against many Imperial IPAs in my market. It is drinkable but has the punch like most Imperial IPAs on the market. It is not over powering like you get from most Imperial IPAs. I highly recommend this brew from Speakeasy. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! Metal it! \m/

New Beer Blog Heavy Seas Brewing Gold Ale

In this beer blog, here is another beer from Heavy Seas Brewing and the beer is called Gold Ale. This is another brew from my Beer of the Month. If you read my earlier blog on their flagship beer while I was in Washington DC, you know the history of this brewery. If you have not, please, read that beer blog post. Let us get into the beer.

This gold ale is what it is a golden color without a head on the beer. The smell is very fade and hard to smell. The taste is a sweet carbonation malty with a small touch of hops. It is not overly hopped. The aftertaste is a dry earthly to a little malty. It is pretty drinkable beer.

Closing, I am not a fan of most of these gold ales or golden ales. I went with a positive attitude to give this beer a chances. The one thing that I love about this beer it is a session beer. Sometimes you need to drink some of these beers to give you a break from the over hop to heavy stout and porters. However, this gold ale gives you some hop finish to keep the hophead happy, I recommend you trying this beer. If you are an experience craft beer or just an American lager drinker, this beer will give you a different pace as an experience beer drinker or set you on the road to drinking more craft beer. New Beer Blog Big Horn Ram Tap Party Wheeling Snow Blower

In this Tap Party Beer Blog, we are going to sample out another beer from Ram Wheeling Tap Party. This is a beer style I did not know was being made. I was very interested in trying this beer. If you read my earlier beer blogs from this brewery, you are up to speed on this brewery. If you have not, please, read the first part of that beer blog. Let us get into the party.

Snow Blower is a wheat wine from the Wheeling location. It has a cloudy cooper color with a semi white head on the beer. There is no smell to the beer or I cannot pick it up. The taste is a little wheaty with a sweet malty that will burn down your throat for the aftertaste in a good way. There is a nice malt backbone. It is kind of drinkable but at 8.3% ABV.

Stylistically it is a Wheat Wine, which is a wheat based version of a barley wine. When tasting this beer the hops come forward right out of the gate with a big hop character and provide a big hop punch, but as it lingers on the palate the slight sweetness from the wheat malt comes through and a slight bit of alcoholic warmth teases the palate.

At 8.2% alcohol by volume and 70+ IBU’s it will warm you and your palate up.

In closing, I really enjoyed going to these Tap Parties. I wish I can make the next one but I have at work training. I was very curious on how this beer will taste. As many of you know, I am not a fan of wheat or wheat base beers. This beer is extremely joyful to drink. The wheat is there but there is a nice hop touch to Snowblower. I love the contrast between wheat, sweetness of the normal barely wine, and hop. It is a drinkable beer but be careful because of the ABV is pretty high. New Beer Blog Sixpoint Brewing Diesel

In this winter beer blog, we are going to get into one of my favorite breweries out of New York City. The brewery is Sixpoint Brewing and the beer is their winter seasonal called Diesel Stout. If you read my earlier beer blog on their beers, you know how I feel towards this brewery and the history of it. If you have not, please, read the beer blog called Sixpoint Brewing Apollo. Let us get into this great stout.

This winter seasonal has a jet black color with a light tan color head to the stout. The smell is a chocolate with a citrus to the beer. The taste is a complex full body beer. It has a chocolate to coffee with piney with a dry chocolate aftertaste. It is drinkable beer to me but I can see people thinking it is not a drinkable beer.

Closing out the winter season, I am sadden by the fact that winter is ending because I love the fall and winter sesaonal beers. Spring and summer seasonals beer are not one of my favorites. I really loves this beer because it gives you something little different. However Sixpoint Brewing gives the craft beer drinker something different, this is way I love Sixpoint. The craft beer drinker will get the stout and then the snap of the piney at the back part of the tasting experience. The piney hops echo in the aftertaste. This is a beer that will give you more for the beer drinker. If you are looking for the normal stout, this beer is not for you. If you are a stout or hophead that is looking for something different in your beer, this beer is perfect for you. I know this beer is not going to be for everyone. I recommend you trying this beer. New Beer Blog Deschutes Brewery Mirror Pond Pale Ale

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another beer from Deschutes Brewery. The beer is part of their everyday line up of beers. The beer is called Mirror Pond Pale Ale. If you read my earlier beer blog on their beers, you know the history of this beer. If you have not, please, read the first part of that beer blog. Let us get into the beer.

It has a clear copper color with a white head on the beer. The smell is a malty citrus to it. The taste is a carbonation earthly with a dry citrus aftertaste to the beer.

Closing, this is not my favorite beer from this beer company. I am really not a fan of this beer. I pick it up because every time I go west and have this beer. There is better Pale Ales in our market here in Chicago. Just because I do not like it does not mean you will not like this beer. Please go try this beer and let me know what you think. I am serious. New Beer Blog Ghostrider White India Pale Ale

While in Milwaukee again, we are going to get into a beer at John’s Hawks in downtown Milwaukee. I have to say this bar has a great beer selection and awesome food. It is a hidden gem in Milwaukee and I hope more people find this bar soon. I could not find any information on this brewery. I found the brewery site with the same name but this beer is not listed. I do not want to give wrong information. Let us get into this great beer.

The color is a hazel yellow without a head on the beer. The smell is a fresh grass and more earthly to the beer. The taste is a wheaty to yeast with a sweet carbonation earthly to the beer. The aftertaste is not really there but fate. It is a pretty drinkable beer for wheat and IPA fans.

It’s looking to be a White Xmas this year at Wasatch Brewing. Yesterday we had the debut of Switch, a Port barrel aged Belgian style Witbier. Today we have its cousin, an aggressively hopped – hybrid beer called Ghostrider White IPA.

First of all it has one of the best looking labels to adorn a local bottle in quite some time. Inside is a beer style that’s becoming very popular in the U.S., the White IPA.

At it’s most basic, a White IPA is a beer that mixes the hop-character and brewing techniques of an India Pale Ale with the wheat base and spice additions of the refreshing Belgian witbier.

GhostRider pours a cloudy, light straw color with a nice sudsy white cap. The nose is full of citrus with hints of wheat and coriander. The beginning of each sip starts out like a wheat beer with notes of biscuit, coriander, lemongrass, and orange peel. Mid palate big citrusy tangerine hops “pop” adding a bit of bitterness to the back of the tongue. Swallowing the beer releases more of the soft and grainy wheat flavors with an emphasis on coriander & cloves in the finish. 6.0% ABV in 12 oz. bottles

This is a nice twist on an IPA. It takes many of the traditional characteristics of a Witbier and combines them with an intense hop character. The flavors come together quite nicely to make this easy to drink, smooth, enjoyable beer.

In closing, I am not a huge fan of this new trend in the IPA sub categories. I am hoping it is a trend because White India Pale Ales are growing pretty fast. There is new White IPA popping on the market everyday. I have to say I did enjoy this beer very much. It was not over the top with yeast or wheaty taste. It was pretty balance. I have to say I pick up more hints of the hops. I would add this to my line up if it was available in Chicago. I recommend this beer if you can find it in your market. I know this is not available in the Chicago market. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! Metal it! \m/

New Beer Blog Milwaukee Brewing Anodyne Brown

While in Milwaukee again, I went on the Milwaukee Brewing Brewery Tour and I saw this brown ale. This was experimental beer and it is called Anodyne Brown Ale. If you read my earlier beer blog on their Pull Chain Pale Ale, you know the history of this brewery. If you have not, please, read the first part of that beer blog. Let us get into this beer.

This coffee brown has a brown color with a white head on the beer. The smell is a coffee. The taste is hazelnut cover coffee with a dry aftertaste. It is pretty drinkable beer.

Closing out, this American brown ale infused with coffee has a ton going on in it. I love the smooth and drinkablity of it. The brown and coffee is not overpowering. It has a nice balance between the two elements in this beer. Just what I said above and about Dark Matter, this is a experimental beer. I have to say this brewery has found ways to push themselves forward and the craft beer world. I just wish more people would get to know their beers and brewery. I wish more beer bloggers would share more love to them. This is a great beer and I hope to see it in bottles or cans in the future. Go do their brewery tour. Go get some! Drink it! Enjoy it! New Beer Blog Milwaukee Brewing Double IPA

While in Milwaukee again, I was up in Milwaukee to see my friends from Milwaukee Brewing. The name of the beer is called Dark Matter. If you have read my earlier beer blog on their Pull Chain, you know the history of this brewery. If you have not, please, read the first part of that beer blog. Let us get into the beer.

This Double IPA has a golden to amber color with a white head. There is not a smell to the beer. It is hard to smell in while on the brewery tour. It has a sweet silky citrus taste without aftertaste. It is extremely drinkable beer for being a big beer.

In closing, I do not know if this is one I had back in the fall but this Double IPA is amazing. I really enjoyed the one in the fall and I loved this one too. It was hard to smell the beer in the brewery so if there is a smell I am sorry I did not pick it up. I love the taste of the hops and the balance of the malty backbone. This was a smooth Double IPA. Uinta Detour Double IPA is my favorite but I have to say this one sets the standards for me for some double IPA’s in the Midwest Breweries. I wish this was in bottle or cans.
