New Beer Blog Widmer Brothers Upheaval IPA

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into the first beer from my beer trade with my friend Matt from the East Coast.  I have been wanting to try this beer and I was pretty excited to get a few bottles.  It is Widmer Brothers Upheaval IPA.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this West Coast craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know Widmer Brothers.  Let us get into Upheaval IPA.

It has a cloudy copper color with a constant white head on this India Pale Ale.  The aroma has a heavy citrus to slight grapefruit notes.  The taste profile of this medium to full body beer is a carbonation citrus notes with a dry hoppy finish.  It is pretty drinkable IPA but I find myself sipping it.

Here is a description from their website (www.widmerbrothers.com):

Upheaval IPA is the result of our brewers’ relentless pursuit of the perfect IPA. With more than two pounds of hops per barrel, Upheaval IPA unleashes a huge hop flavor and aroma with serious bitterness and balanced finish. Brewed with wheat, the result is a hazy, bold IPA that’s Unfiltered. Unexpected. Unapologetic. Uncompromised.

Closing, this is an awesome brew.  I really enjoyed it.  I just find it funny.  When I make this trade with my friend, package finds its way into my market but it is still a drive.  I am cool with that because now I can pick up a six-pack.  I love big malty backbone with some Northwest hops.  It has a nice bold and powerful hop character but nice enough to make it drinkable beer.  Widmer Brothers did it again.  They pushed the limits of craft beer.  This is the new standard of IPA’s.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Widmer Brothers Hefe The Original American Hefeweizen

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into a classic beer.  This brew helped moved me into the craft beer scene along with Red Hook Brewery.  It is Widmer Brothers Hefe.  It is one of their first brews and it is the most popular American Hefeweizen.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts, you know the history of this Northwest Craft Brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know Widmer Brothers.  Let us get into this German Style Hefeweizen.

This beer has a cloudy straw to golden color with a white head.  In the light, it has almost bright yellow to almost like dark white yellow color.  The aroma has yeasty to wheat notes with citrus notes.  It is almost like lemon.  The taste has wheat to citrus notes with a lemon notes to aftertaste.  It is pretty refreshing and easy drinking for any season.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

This naturally cloudy brew starts with the highest quality malted wheat. Its bold, clean flavor and pronounced citrus and floral aromas are what define American Hefeweizen. Prost! To the original.

Here is a description from their website (www.widmerbrothers.com):

Meet the beer that started it all. Our naturally cloudy flagship brew starts with the highest quality wheat. It’s bold, clean flavor and pronounced citrus and floral aromas are what define American-style Hefeweizen. So pour yourself a cool, cloudy glass, finish with a lemon and enjoy the original.

Closing, this is a classic craft beer and I will always find myself enjoying one Hefe during the spring and summer.  This is one of the best craft Hefeweizen on the market.  I have always recommend this beer if they are looking for something different from their normal craft beer drinking or a guy looking to switch from the mass-produced beers.  This is a great light to medium body beer with a nice refreshing taste notes.  If you are looking for a change-up or a nice summer like beer to enjoy in any season, this is your beer.  I highly recommend you trying this beer at least a few times.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Widmer Brothers Brewing Brrr Seasonal Ale

image

In this winter beer blog, we are going to sample out another beer from Widmer Brothers Brewing and the beer is their winter seasonal called Brrr Seasonal Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog on their beer, you know the history of this brewery.  If you have not, please, read the first part of that beer blog.  Let us get into brew.

Widmer Brothers Brrr seasonal ale has a light brown color with a semi white head on the beer. The smell is a citrus to it.  The taste is a sweet carbonation little malty with a citrus touch to the beer.  The aftertaste is a dry aftertaste. It is a pretty drinkable hoppy beer for the winter seasonal.

Here is a description from their website (www.widmerbrothers.com):

Warm Up with a Cold One. Or Two. Our winter red ale is the perfect treat, naughty or nice. The deep red body fills your glass and a citrusy hop aroma fills your nose. Then caramel and chocolate malts reward you with a perfectly balanced, malty sweet flavor and velvety finish.

Closing, this is an awesome beer from the Widmer Brothers.  I really like what this brewery is doing.  They are going back to roots and pushing the limits of craft beer brewing.  This winter seasonal gives the craft beer drinker something you do not get from the other winter seasonal and it is hops and hops and more hops.  It has the malty and warming but gives it a hoppy finish.  It is like malty winter seasonal India Pale Ale.  Plus, it is extremely drinkable and it will get you in trouble so be careful.  This is a beer is part a sampler pack with Redhook Winter Hook and Kona Pipeline Porter.  It is hard to get so if you see it, you better grab it.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Blog Widmer Fresh Hop Columbia Common

image

When in Portland, this is the second beer I had at the Widmer Brothers Brewpub.  It is their Fresh Hop Columbia Common.  If you read my earlier blog, you know a little something about this brewery.  If you have not, please, go back and read the first part of that blog post.  Let us get into the brew.

It has a nice copper color with a semi white head on this fresh hop ale. There is really no smell to the beer but picking up a little citrus smell.  The taste has a sweet malty but yet has a citrus carbonation to the taste. It has a nice pale ale aftertaste, which is dry hoppy finish.  It is extremely drinkable.

Closing out, the meaning of fresh hop is when  they start the brewing process.  There are fresh hops picked from the farm and then pour into the brew kettle.  There is not many breweries that have ability to do this process unless they are by a few hop farms.  Portland Breweries have this option and you see many fresh hop brews around the city.  Even the little brew pubs get into the action of making their own fresh hop brew.  We do not get many that make it out east because they are made in such a small batch.  There are times that the breweries do not make enough and they want to take care of their home market, which I totally understand.  I really enjoyed this one.  I believe I had three while I was out in Portland and Seattle.  This one was the best and impressed me.  I would love to try this same recipe but not fresh hop next to each other to see the difference.  I really enjoyed the citrus in the smell and taste.  It is drinkable and I could have drank this beer all day.  It is only available in their brewpub for a limited time only.  Go get some or just put a bird on it!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Blog Widmer Alt

When in Portland at Widmer Brothers Brewpub, after our brewery tour, which I did really enjoyed the depth of details, we were able to get some lunch and a few brews.  If you read my earlier blog on their Raspberry Imperial Russian Stout, you are pretty know this brewery.  If you have not read that beer post, please, read the first of that beer post.  Let us get into this great brew.

I had this beer at their brewpub. It has a nice amber color with semi white head on the beer.  It has a sweet malty smell to this alt.  The taste is a nice sweet carbonation malty with a dry finish to it. It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.widmerbrothers.com

In closing, I am a huge fan of Alt ales.  I believe there are some really good Alts out there and there are some really bad Alts.  There is no middle of the road on this beer style for craft brewery. Either the brewery can make a really good one or just do not make it all.  I hate to be so harsh on Brewmasters.  This is a science and an art form.  I know for a fact that Einstein would not put some of his thoughts on paper unless they were really good.  It would go with Vincent Van Gogh making his master pieces.  This beer is done very good and it is everything I look for in this beer style.  I would put this beer in my line up but it is only available in draft and at their brewpub.  If you are out in Portland, check out the Widmer Brothers’ brewpub for this beer and some great food.  Put a bird on it and go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Blog Widmer Brothers Citra Blonde Summer Brew

In this blog, we need to travel west to visit one of the original craft breweries here in the states.  The brewery and brew is Widmer Brothers Citra Blonde Summer Brew.  I wrote earlier post on Widmer Brothers Russia Imperial Raspberry Stout and there is a nice belief history on that blog.  If you have not read it, please, go back and read it.  If you have, we will now move on to this Summer Beer.  Let us do this beer.

Widmer Brothers Citra Blonde Summer Brew is their Summer Seasonal from this brewery.  This beer is a very bright golden clear in color with no head.  It has a slight citrus smell to it.  It has a very light in body with a slight lemon carbonation taste. The aftertaste is very light. This is a very sessionable and refreshing beer for the summer.

Here is a descriation from their website (www.widmerbrothers.com):

Citra hops lend their name to this interpretation of a golden ale. But that’s not all they bring to the party. Their striking citrus aroma and thirst-quenching flavor are the perfect pairing for soft malt notes. Together they create a beer that’s full in flavor and uniquely refreshing.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

In closing, I am not a fan of many summer seasonal but this one is not bad.  However, I know myself, I know I will get very bored with this beer pretty quick.  This is just me and it might not be the case for you.  This is a very drinkable and refreshing beer and perfect for the hot summer days.  This brewery has taken classic beer style and put their twist on it.  I just feel this beer is missing something to me.  It is still a good beer and I could see myself enjoying it the rest of this summer.   Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!
