New Beer Blog Stone Brewing Wootstout

In this beer blog,  we are going to get into a special limited release and special beer to me.  It is from Stone Brewery and the beer is their Wootstout.  This brew was team brewing process from Drew Curtis, Greg Koch, and Wil Wheaton.  If you read my early beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this brewery.  If you have not read those posts, please, read those beer blog posts to get to know this brewery.  Let us get into the beer.

It has a jet black color with a constant tan to light brown head on the beer.  The smell is chocolate cover pecans.  The taste of this light to medium body beer is chocolate cover pecans notes. There is some vanilla notes that blends nicely with the pecans. The aftertaste is a dry coffee to toffee pecan aftertaste.  For being a stout, this is scary and extremely drinkable beer.

“Wil Wheaton first called us in 2004 to ask if it’d be OK for him to put the Arrogant Bastard logo on this blog’s website (back when people still asked permission to do such things), and I just so happened to answer the phone (back when I still answered the main line sometimes).  Since he was so damn enthusiastic about our beers, I said ‘Sure, no problem.’ all the while thinking ‘ Hmmm… this guy’s name sounds familiar.’

Months later, in a serendipitous turn of fate, I reached out to our 10,000th email newsletter subscriber … drumroll … Wil Wheaton.  Since his gigs in the iconic Stand By Me and Star Trek: The Next Generation, Wil has become quite the renaissance man, adding author, w00tstock innovator, and homebrewer to his resume.  His enthusiasm for the fermentable arts and our beer was such that after many occasions of sharing grog over the years, we decided it was time to brew in collaboration.

It was no-brainer for us to choose Drew Curtis – who many know as the twisted mind behind Fark.com – as our third cohort.  Drew was an old friend of Wil’s that I had serendipitously met (when he saw me and told me, ‘Dude, I love your beer!’) and enjoyed many beers with at the famous TED confenece three years in a row.  The beer you told before you is an Imperial stout made with wheat (Wil pretty much insisted), and we also paid tribute to Drew’s Kentucky roots by adding rye and pecans to the mix and partially aging the beer in bourbon barrels.  The result?  Nothing short of serendipitous.”

Closing out, many of these beers hit the shelf and go pretty quickly.  In most cases, these beers let many of the beer drinkers down with the liquid.  This brew is totally different.  These three guys put a ton of thought behind it and put their stamp on it, which you can see the details above in description from the beer bottle selection.  This is a great brew.  I love the stout and the wheat malt makes this stout light in body.   I love the chocolate and the pecans gives this brew another element.  It blends nicely with the beer and then age the beer in barrels that gives some nice vanilla notes.  If you can find this beer, I highly recommend this brew.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Stone Ruin Ten IPA

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another brew, which is Ruin Ten IPA, from Stone Brewery.  If you read my earlier beer blog post, you know the history of this brewery.  If you have not, please, read that beer blog post to get to know this great California brewery.  Let us get into the beer.

It has a clear copper color with a constant white head on the ale.  The smell is a piney to earthy notes.  The taste is about the same with carbonated piney to earthy notes.  The aftertaste has a dry hop finish. It is a sipping beer.

We first released this decidedly indelicate beer in 2012, as Stone Ruination Tenth Anniversary IPA, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our belovedly bitter Stone Ruination IPA. Stone RuinTen IPA uses the same recklessly hoppy recipe as the 2012 release; only the name has changed, as we plan to unleash this belligerently delicious hop monster upon the public annually from now on. We packed a whopping five pounds of hops into each barrel, and cranked up the ABV to stand up to the hop onslaught. In closing, Stone has a hop beast on their hands here.  I have to say I enjoyed it very much, however, I just feel like this brew is over hopped too much.  Even their normal brew, Stone Ruination IPA is over hopped to me.  It could be the type of hops they are using makes me feel  this way.  I have to say it is a great beers.  Please, do not think this is a negative note.  There are IPA’s or Imperial IPA’s that are design just like this one.  I love my fair share of them.  This is a great beer but not a beer I will be drinking all the time.  I will mix it in and out of my line up of beers once in a while.  I recommend you trying this beer and I would love to hear your thoughts on it.  I love talking about beer and hearing what other people think about it.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Stone Enjoy By 05-17-13 IPA

In this beer blog, we are going to get into another beer from the Stone Brewery.  The beer is a limited and rare release 22oz bottles.  It is an unique Double India Pale Ale.  The name of the beer is when the beer goes out of code.    If you read my earlier beer blog on their Flagship beer, which is IPA, you know the history of this brewery.  If you have not, please, read that beer blog post.  Let us get into this beer.

This special Double India Pale Ale has a clear semi dark golden color with a constant white head. The smell is is a heavy piney but a touch of a tropical fruit. There is a ton going on in the smell. The taste is a piney but a dry hoppy tropical fruit. It is drinkable beer but careful drinking it.

Ending, this beer lives up to what it is which is “Live For The Now, The Present.”  Stone Brewing is a doing good thing and making a statement in the Craft Beer World.  I believe all brewers are looking for fresh product in the market.  However, this is a solid beer, it is a big hoppy beer that has a nice and solid malty backbone.  I love how they use social media to show where people are enjoying this beer.  This will start a trend but it has to have a great beer behind it.  This beer is an awesome beer and I am glad I had it.  I will looking for more before the date comes to head.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Blog Stone Cali-Belgique IPA


In this blog, we are going to the west coast to check out a brewery that has push the limits of hops and craft beer drinkers around the country since there exists.  This brewery I am talking about is Stone Brewery and the beer is Cali-Belgique IPA.  Here is a little history on this west coast brewery.  Stone Brewery was founded in 1996 in San Marcos, California by Steve Wagner and Greg Koch.  This brewery is now the largest brewery in Southern California.  This brewery as of 2010 became the 14th largest craft brewery and 23rd overall brewery.  Stone Brewery is still growing and still doing different things with their beers.  They have beer teaming up with different breweries around the country to create new beers. We are going to get into one right now.

I am trying this beer at the Blues Bar in Mount Prospect, Illinois.  This beer is bright yellow color with little to no head. The beer drinker will smell the funky from Belgian spices or yeast and a little melon or mango smell from the hops. It is a little different than the American craft Belgian IPA or Triple. This Stone brew taste like sweet carbonation citrus going on in it.  There is no really no aftertaste to this beer.  This beer is a very drinkable beer.

When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California-style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch-speaking Belgians say “België”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that  illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA. The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone brew—and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

In closing, I will be honest and let just say the way it is about this beer.  I really enjoyed drinking this beer.  This is a Belgian Triple not a Belgian IPA.  I understand what American Craft Breweries are trying to do for the general beer fan that understand what India Pale Ale but do not understand a Belgian Triple.  I believe they are trying to create a new beer style to grow off the Belgian Beer Style. There is nothing wrong with this brewery doing it or another brewery. Hell I just brought a pint so they got me and I am glad I did it. I just hate the name that is all. I am off my soap box on this topic.  With that all set at the side, I really enjoy drinking this beer.  If you are hop head like me or like the Belgian beers, I would go try this beer.  Go get some!
