New Beer Blog Blue Point Brewery Old Howling Bastard

image

While at Ashley’s Westland, you would think it is winter in summer with these last two beer posts.  We are going to sample Blue Point Brewery Old Howling Bastard.  If you read earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of Blue Point Brewery.  If you have not, please, read to get to know this New York Craft Brewery.  Let us get into this Barley Wine.

It has a filter dark brown to amber color maybe dark bronze color.  The aroma has a sweet malty notes.  The taste has a sweet malty with a dry aftertaste.  It is a nice sipping beer throughout the winter season.

Here is a description from their website (www.bluepointbrewing.com):

Some Long Island Winters can make just about anyone surly. Old Howling Bastard was named after a certain colorful local character years ago, but when the weather gets cold a lot of folks around here get cranky waiting on our bold barley wine to hit taps. Our special barley wine is made with English 2-row barley and Vienna malt. Its robust, malty, caramel flavor is balanced by lots and lots of hops, giving it a great depth of character. Drink only in moderation, the colorful name is not all that will grab your attention. Try an Old Howling Bastard in a snifter or wineglass – the trick is to never forget that after a few, you too, may turn into a howling bastard!

In closing, this brew has a ton of flavor and has aged very nicely in the keg.  I just feel at times when a Barley Wine is released to the public.  They are at times are too young and need to be aged.  I did not feel that way about this beer.  I have to say it is so much better aged.  This beer lives up to the classic beer style.  I really enjoyed this brew and pretty much any beer from Blue Point Brewery.  I highly recommend it.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Sweetwater Brewery Road Trip Ale

image

In this beer blog, we are going to sample one of their seasonal from Sweetwater Brewery.  It is their Road Trip Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts, you know the history of this craft brewery.  If you have not read my posts on their India Pale Ale, please, do to get to know Sweetwater Brewery.  Let us get into Road Trip Ale.

It has a clear golden color with a constant white head on this golden ale.  The smell has a sweet malty notes.  The taste profile of this light to medium body has sweet malty to hoppy notes with a nice dry hoppy finish for the aftertaste.  It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

Road Trips are carefree adventures that usually take unexpected twists, like when we crafted this beer.  It started out as a Pilsner recipe, but halfway through it blew a tire and ale yeast was put on as the spare.  The result was so good, it never could have been planned!

Enjoy the Ride!

Here is a description from their website (www.sweetwaterbrew.com):

Bikini Season – a fiery Pilsner fermented at ale temperatures for a fuller flavor, capped by and intense spicy-hop finish. Nobody Rides for Free

Specs – 5.2% alcohol available in six packs, Liter bottles, 15.5 Gallon ½ bbl kegs (US Sankey) and 5 gallon torpedo kegs.

Grain – Pilsner and Vienna Malt

Hops – Sterling and US Golding

In closing, I love the story of this brew.  I can see that happening all the time in the brewery kitchen.  There is nothing wrong with that.  I just wish more breweries take it and keep on going with it.  I remember a few years back when I lived in Chicago.  Goose Island Matilda came out as a bad patch but it was not bad.  It was not Matilda.  It came out as a sour ale.  They redid and called it something else. I am not saying it is the case with this beer from Sweetwater.  The point is sometimes mistakes can be a good thing in the brewing process.  This is a great and drinkable brew.  I enjoyed this beer and I could enjoy it by the beach to a nice summer day.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

Closing, this is a great Rye IPA and medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival.  It is pretty balance from the rye and the hops.  I love that the rye is not overpowering the rest of the beer.  They only used 25% in the brew total.  It is enough to give you some nice notes and the hops take over from there.  There is a nice well designed malty backbone that helps cut through the hops.  It is pretty well balance and well designed.  I wish this brewery was up in Michigan but I will enjoy  the bottles I have.  I love this brewery and I will keep searching for a trade partner.  I highly recommend this beer and rest of their beers.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Victory Brewery Dirt Wolf Double IPA

image

In this beer blog, we are going to get into Dirt Wolf Double IPA from Victory Brewery.  This is the first review of a beer from Victory Brewery.  This is the first time Victory Brewery has appeared on this blog.  I have had a few of their beers and I do not know why I have never blogged about them.  Victory Brewery is from Downingtown, Pennsylvania and was founded in 1996.  Victory’s beers are sold in thirty-four states.  They brew several different beers.  Let us get into this Double IPA.

This Double IPA has a cloudy cooper color with a constant white head.  The aroma has a grapefruit to citrus notes.  The taste has a light carbonated citrus to grapefruit notes with a dry hop bitter aftertaste.  It is a nice sipping beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

Darky heroic, Humulus Lupulus (hops) have empowered brews with bite and character since the 11th century.  DirtWolf is a tribute to these untamed vines which rise from the earth with the voracity of a ‘wolf among sheep.’  Hops ave made an assertive comeback in American craft brewing.  Revel in the best US varieties of hops, in their natural, whole flower form, as they bring a vital, pungent reality to the soul of a wild element in our dangerously satisfying DirtWolf.  Cheers, Bill Ron Brewmaster of Victory

Closing, here is a double IPA that I was not expecting to have some things going on in it.  I love the hop character in this brew.  I love the citrus to grapefruit notes that are kicking off in this brew.  It is a nice relaxing sipping beer.  The brewmaster build a strong malty backbone to cut through the heavy hop flavor.  There is a ton going on and you get new things in every sip you take.  I love exploring beers like this more than the normal beers or the beers that are not as complex.  This is a great beer and I highly recommend this brew.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Ommegang Brewery Glimmerglass Spring Saison

image

In this beer blog, we are going to sample out the new Spring Seasonal from Ommegang Brewery.  It is called Glimmerglass Spring Saison.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this Cooperstown Craft Brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this craft brewery.  Let us get into this Spring Seasonal.

This Saison has a slight cloudy yellow color with a constant white head.  The aroma has a refreshing malty, hop, and hint of pepper.  The taste has a light carbonated malty to fruit notes with a nice pepper finish for the aftertaste.  It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

Glimmerglass – The name given to our lake by James Fenimore Cooper – is a beautiful body, nested between gentle mountains, it reflects any object held up to it, just as it reflects our joy at the arrival of each spring.  To help celebrate, our new spring saison offers a perfect balance of maltiness and hops, with a touch of yeasty fruitness and whiff of pepper.

Here is a description from their website (www.ommegang.com):

Glimmerglass

Author James Fenimore Cooper gave the name ‘Glimmerglass’ to the beautiful body of water that graces Cooperstown. Nestled between gentle mountains, it reflects any object held up to it, just as it reflects our joy at the arrival of each spring.

Deep straw to light amber in color with a thick, pure white head. The saison yeast strain gives off fruity aromas of pear, apple and slight citrus balanced with a delicate floral hop character and a touch of spiciness. Taste is very clean, with pronounced fruit flavors, delicate bready malt followed by welcomed spicing. Crisp finish with lingering yet subtle notes of yeast and touches of fruity pepper.

5.4% ABV

Closing, I love pretty much all the beers that Ommegang Brewery.  I had the chance to visit the brewery over a weekend and I had a ton of fun.  I love the brewery tour and had a chance to try rest of their line up of beers.  I have to call like it is for this brew.  Ommegang Brewery needs to open their eyes and see what is going on in the beer industry.  How many more saisons do we need from you or in the market?  I get this saison is a little different than their everyday one, which is their Hennepin Ale.  This beer is below average for their standards. They have done a great job on the Games Of Thornes beers.  I just feel that the market is not looking for another saison.  I have to say this is a good to great beer.  I love how much flavor is in it.  I love the pepper notes in the aftertaste.  I like it until I realize how much I paid for it.  Their beers are great.  I just feel they do not live up to the price you paid at retail.  It is not the case for all their beers.  Please, keep that in mind.  I recommend you trying this beer and the rest of their beers.  Let me know your thoughts on this Spring Saison.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Sweetwater Brewery IPA

image

In this beer blog, we are going to sample IPA from Sweetwater Brewery.  I am a huge fan of this southern craft brewery.  I am happy and honor to review four of their beers on my blog finally.  It took me a long time to get a few bottles in my hands.  Sweetwater was founded in 1997 by Freddy Bensch and Kevin McNerny in Atlanta, Georgia.  They brew several different beer styles and I am pretty impressed thar they have only two retired beers.  Let us get into this IPA.

It has a cloudy copper color with a nice constant white head on this India Pale Ale.  The aroma has floral to piney notes.  The taste has a light carbonation with hints of piney and earthy notes.  The aftertaste has a piney to earthy notes that do not last long.  It is a drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

This Mammoth IPA is dry hopped to the gills, delivering a kick-you-in-the-teeth hop chop.  This beer is unfiltered and, as always with Sweetwater’s brews, unpasteurized to leave all the natural flavors intact.

Here is a description from their website (www.sweetwaterbrew.com):

This mammouth India Pale Ale is loaded with intense hop character and subjected to an extensive dry-hopping process. Our IPA is unfiltered, leaving all the natural flavors intact.

The Beer You’ve Been Training For.

Closing, I had this beer in my beer months that was years back when I first moved to Chicago.  I have been searching and trying to trade to get some Sweetwater Brewery.  This brewery makes some great beers and I wish they would make it more north.  I do not know how well they will do but I know I will be buying them.  I love the aroma and taste profile.  This beer has a strong and well build malty backbone that cuts through the hops.  I highly recommend this beer if you can find it.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Southern Tier Farmer’s Tan IPA

image

In this beer blog, we are going to sample Farmer’s Tan IPA from Southern Tier.  This is the frist time Southern Tier has appear on this blog.  Southern Tier was founded in Lakewood, New York in 2002.  The brewery was founded by Phineas DeMink and Allen Yahn.  They brew several different beer styles and has expanded their brewery a few times to keep up with demand.  This brewery continues to grow to this day.  Last year, they broke ground on a new brewhouse.  Let us get into this Session IPA.

It has a clear copper color with a white constant head on this session IPA.  The aroma has a floral to citrus notes.  The taste has a light carbonated citrus notes with a nice dry hop aftertaste.  It is an extremely drinkable to crushable beer.

Here is a description from their website (www.stbcbeer.com):

When the sun hangs high overhead and the stars don’t glimmer until well into the evening, there’s nothing better than grabbing another beer. We specially crafted Farmer’s Tan to be the beer you enjoy on those long summer days. At 4.6% abv, it’s one of our lightest, with a smooth body and easy finish. We carefully limited the ingredients to two types of hops and two types of malts for a perfectly balanced, “sessional” India Pale Ale. We’ve got the beer covered. It’s up to you to keep the sunscreen on.

ABOUT THE NAME: Pardon any confusion on the recycled name as this version of Farmer’s Tan is indeed a brand new beer. Long-time Southern Tier fans may remember it as an Imperial Pale Lager, brewed as a summer seasonal (2010-2012). Farmer’s Tan 2014 is a wholly new beer and is different in every way, save for the name.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Particularly tasty when paired with hot dogs, burgers and grilled foods. Cheddar and derby cheeses, pizza and summer fare.

AVAILABILITY: Spring/summmer / 12oz (6pk and 24 bottle cases) / ½ keg, 1/6 keg

BOTTLE CONDITIONED: “For bottle conditioning, a small amount of sugar and yeast is added to the beer so that a small fermentation occurs in each bottle after packaging. This small fermentation does two important things: (1) it contributes carbonation to the beer and (2) it scavenges any residual oxygen that may have gotten into the beer during packaging. By further reducing the oxygen content of our packaged beer, the shelf stability of the beer is improved, making it taste fresher, longer. Bottle conditioning does result in a small amount of sediment in each bottle. This sediment is just brewer’s yeast and is completely harmless, tasteless, and odorless. If you’d rather not see it floating around in your glass, be sure to not agitate the bottle before serving, pour carefully, and leave a few milliliters in the bottom of the bottle at the end of the pour.”

In closing, I had several beers from this brewery.  I have to say I love their IPA’s but the rest of their beers.  I really do not know how I feel about them.  I know their Pumpking that I could do without in my world.  I know many people enjoy that beer and there is nothing wrong with it.  I was at my local craft beer bar and I saw this on draft.  I did not  have to look at the rest of the beer menu.  As many of you know, session IPA’s are growing at a rapid rate.  It seems like there is a new one hitting the market everyday.  The new ones are better than the last one.  This one topped Sierra Nevada Nooner IPA or tied in my world.  I really enjoyed this beer and love the hop notes.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it! Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Magic Hat Dream Machine IPL

image

In this beer blog, we are going to try a new beer, which is Dream Machine, from Magic Hat Brewery. If you read my earlier beer blog posts, you know the history of this Northeast Craft Brewery. If you have not read those posts, please, read them to get to know this craft brewery. Let us get into this beer.

It has a slight cloudy copper color with a creamy white head on this India Pale Lager.  The aroma has a heavy citrus notes.  The taste has a slight carbonated citrus notes with a nice crisp clean finish.  It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

The ancient ritual of brewing a distinctly rich and flavorful beer is a performance to behold. Our mysterious melange of times honored ingredients harmonize with chaotic chemistry, humble patience, and blind faith to create this unique beer to share in the rousing company of kindred spirits. Cheers!

Here is a description from their website (http://www.magichat.net):

THE STORY

Currents flow through lips, swim through limbs, lines of spine, and loop back ’round again, coming to rest in the comfort of your mind. Dream Machine whirrs, something stirs and the ether swirls with visions and dreams, reminding us that nothing in our minds must be what it seems.

THE BEER

Dream Machine, an India Pale Lager or IPL, is a melding of varied visions of an India Pale Ale and an Amber Lager. Once poured, its light copper color delights the eyes and a citrusy hop aroma flows through the nose. Upon first sip, a smooth hop bitterness reveals itself – fresh, bold and slightly spicy – before subtle hints of mild maltiness appear. A big hop bite and a crisp, clean lager finish combine for a beautifully balanced beer. Take Dream Machine for a spin and let your reverie begin.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website: http://www.magichat.net

Twitter:  @magichat

Closing, I have to say the later versions of IPL’s are making the earlier ones look really bad.  I will be honest at first I was not a fan of IPL’s.  I thought it was a joke or a fake of a beer style.  More and more craft breweries are making their version of India Pale Lager.  I understand why.  IPA’s are growing at a rapid rate and craft breweries are expanding IPA styles in that world.  I am a pretty big fan of Wolverine IPL.  I have to say Magic Hat out did themselves on their brew.  They have best IPL that I had so far on the market.  I know there are few more IPL’s coming soon and I will be looking for them when they hit the market.  Dream Machine is my favorite one so far.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Ommengang Games of Thrones Take The Black Stout (Age A Year)

image

In a fantasy world, we are going to sample the second beer from Ommengang Brewery and Games of Thornes. If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this craft brewery. If you have not read them, please, do so to get to know craft brewery. Let us get into Take The Black Stout.

This stout has a jet black color with a nice constant tan head.  The aroma has a roasted chocolate notes.  The taste has a sweet chocolate with a hint of creamy caramel with a nice chocolate dry aftertaste.  It is a nice sipping stout.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

A stout as dark as the winters that once engulfed Westeros. As robust as the men who swear their oaths at the Weirwood Tree. Chocolate and caramel sweetness are balanced by hop bitterness roasty, woodsy notes, and an earthy finish.

Here is a description from their website (www.ommegang.com):

Ommegang and HBO® announce the newest beer in the Game of Thrones® collaboration series. Through its first three seasons, the critically acclaimed drama has become the biggest show on HBO. Take the Black Stout follows the highly coveted Iron Throne Blonde Ale, which flew off of shelves earlier this year. To satisfy the appetite of Game of Thrones fans, production of Take the Black Stout will more than double the final volumes of Iron Throne Blonde Ale.

Inspired by the brotherhood of the Night’s Watch, Take the Black Stout was made to be deep, dark and complex like those who have sworn the oath to defend Westeros against threats from the north. The label depicts the Weirwood tree where Jon Snow recited the oath before joining the Night’s Watch.

In time for the holidays, Take the Black Stout makes for the perfect gift. Shipping to distributors in September 2013, the beer is available in 750 ML bottles and 1/6 barrel kegs.

Here is their website and twitter addresses:

Website:  www.ommegang.com

Twitter: @breweryommegang and @gameofthornes

In closing, I brought two bottles when it was released.  I had the one right away and I just saved this bottle for a raining day.  I wanted to share my thoughts on this brew.  I am a huge fan of the show.  I was really disappointed with the first release.  This was something else.  I love the story behind the Night’s Watch.  I have to say Ommegang Brewery went up and beyond making this beer good.  I love the creamy chocolate and notes caramel.  It is a nice beer to have after dinner or a sipping beer while relaxing. I aged this bottle for a year from when I picked it up. It held up really well and it did not change in the bottle. I was pretty disappointed with that but it is still an awesome beer. Good Job! If you can find a bottle, pick it up.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!
