New Beer Blog Pipeworks Ninja Vs Unicorn Double IPA

In this beer blog, we are going to feature a beer from Pipeworks Brewery.  It is their flagship  beer, which is Ninja Vs. Unicorn Double IPA.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know the history of this small and upcoming Chicago base craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this Midwest craft brewery.  Let us get into this double IPA.

It has a slight cloudy golden color with a white constant head. The aroma has a heavy grapefruit notes. The taste has a nice grapefruit to citrus notes with a dry hop bitter aftertaste. It is pretty drinkable for a Double IPA.

Here is a description from the beer bottle:

Ninja Vs. Unicorn celebrates the epic battle two of the biggest hop-heads of lore.  Brewed with over five pounds of hops per barrel, this unfiltered double IPA is sure to please the most discerning hop lover.  Whether you’re rooting for the mythical horned horse or the deadly assassin of the east, we hope you’ll enjoy Ninja Vs. Unicorn.

Ending, this is a great beer.  I love the hops they use in this beer.  It is pretty well-balanced for being a double India Pale Ale.  There is a nice malty backbone but I kind feel it should be stronger.  I can live with it.  I have to say for a beer that is in 22oz bottle.  It is well worth the price.  I have always felt beers in 22oz bottles are not worth the price.  To me, this one lives up to the price.  I recommend you trying this brew.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Finch’s Brewery Tour

image

While in Chicago, I had more time to check out another brewery.  It is a little brewery that was founded three years ago in Chicago.  They are known for packaging their beers in cans.  They are up to seven different beer styles in cans and they also package some beer in tall single bottles, which is 22oz bottles.  The brewery is named after the founder, who are Benjamin and Paul Finch. They are located on the Northside of Chicago.  They started out at this location and has expanded, however, they started out with two beers, which are Cut Throat Pale Ale and Gold Wing Blonde Ale.

Tour Guide:

In this photos above, the guy in the green shirt, who is Nick, in the middle of this crowd was the tour guide.  Nick is a teacher for his full-time job and does this part-time.  He is also a homebrewer and I am not sure if he helps around the brewery.  However, he works on the brewery tours and sets up tour dates and times.  He is an awesome tour guide.  He knew the history and the beers.  He is not reading off paper or memorizing history scripts unlike some tour guides. He is a student of this craft brewery and he puts a personality into this brewery tour.

Closing, I learn something from this tour and that is a huge apprise to this tour.  I enjoyed my time at the brewery and glad I went to check out this brewery.  The one thing  that I learned during this brewery tour was the discontinuing of two of their beers.  Both beers were the first two beers they started brewing.  Both are going to be discontinued and replace with two new beers. The Cut Throat Pale Ale will still be a pale ale but a different one. The Gold Wing Blonde Ale will be replace with Hardcore Double IPA. I believe that is the name.  I love the direction of this craft brewery.  They have a bright future and I believe their newer beers will take this craft brewery to the next level.  I highly recommend getting down and take a brewery tour.  If you do not have the chance, go and  try some of their beers.  I promise you will not be disappointed with their Black IPA and Stout.  This craft brewery makes some great beers and they are extremely under rated.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Local Option Sweet Leaf

image

While in Chicago, we are going to sample some beers the next four days from Local Option.  The first one beer up is their Sweet Leaf Ale.  There is really no history on the internet for Local Option.  They are based in Chicago. What I do know when visiting this brewpub, it is a metal bar.  They play some extreme metal.  The food was amazing and the bartender when I was there knew his beers.  This brewery tries to do something different with their beers and I believe they are successful at it.  Let us get into this beer.

It has a cloudy golden color without a head.  The smell has a heavy tea notes.  The taste has medium pallet malty sweet notes with a sweet tea note finish.  It is extremely drinkable brew.

Here is a description from their website (www.localoptionbier.com):

Sweet Leif is a Bière de Garde infused with Chinese Sencha Green Tea. The beer pours deep gold with aromas of earthy spice and fruit esters. Flavors of grass, toasted malt and slightly sweet caramel are immediately present, augmented by a smooth, medium body and a dry finish. You will love Sweet Leif though it can’t hear you.

Closing, this beer reminds so much of Milwaukee Brewery O-Gii Ale.  The difference between these beers is O-Gii Ale is a Belgian Style White Ale and this one is a French to Belgian base beer style, which is Bière de Garde.  I have to say between the two.  I love this one better.  The tea shines through out the beer drinking experience and it is not overpowering.  It has a nice refreshing and easy drinking beer.  I am not sure if they package this but I hope they do in the first.  This is one brew that they brew in Marshall, Michigan at Dark Horse Brewery.  I do not know that Dark Horse Brewery has anything to do with this brew.  I wonder if they name this beer after the classic Black Sabbath song.  I highly recommend this beer.  If you are visiting Chicago, you need to stop by their brewpub.  You will not be disappointed from the food and the beer selection.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Church Street Brewing Continental Lager

image

In this beer blog, Church Street Brewing is making its first appearance on this blog with their Continental Lager.  Joe Gregor traveled around checking out local beers around the world and found a nice location in the Northwest Burbs of Chicago.  Joe loves German Lagers and the craft beer drinkers will see a few Lagers in their beer line ups.  This brewery opened the doors for the first time in 2012.  They brew several different beer styles asides Lagers.  Let us get into this Lager.

It has golden color with a big white constants head.  The carbonation is heavy on this lager.  There is really no smell.  The taste has a light carbonation with a slight malty to hoppy notes.  The aftertaste is clean crisp finish.  It is a pretty drinkable lager.

Here is a description from their website (www.churchstreetbrew.com):

Smooth and drinkable, yet malty and complex with a noble hop kick. Church Street’s Continental Lager marries four German malts with three German hop varieties to create our quintessential pilsner.  Notes of biscuit and grassy/floral hops make this a great beer to kick back with anytime. Enjoy!

  • ABV 5.3%
  • IBU 39
  • SRM 7

In the end, I have been on a search for a good craft lager.  I believe this one from Church Street Brewing has come pretty close to it.  This lager to me is too close to the European Lager Style.  It is still good brew.  I wished I could get another bottle of this brew but they are not available in the Southeast part of Michigan.   I really did enjoy this Lager and it is towards the top of my lager list. I recommend this brew and I hope to hear your thoughts on this brew.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Off Color Brewing Troublesome Wheat Beer

image

Another beer before the road, Troublesome Wheat Beer from Off Color Brewing is the second brew to be reviewed on this beer blog.  If you read my beer blog from yesterday of their Scurry, you know the history of this upcoming craft brewery out of Chicago.  If you have not, please, read yesterday’s beer blog post to get to know Off Color Brewing.  Let us get into the beer.

It has a cloudy yellow color with a semi white head on this wheat ale.  The smell is lemon like but that comes from coriander notes.  The taste is a heavy citrus to coriander notes with a citrus aftertaste.  It is pretty drinkable.

Here is a description from their website (www.offcolorbrwing.com):

TROUBLESOME

Blended Wheat Beer

Most brewers spend a lot of time and effort keeping lactobacillus out of their breweries; it was the first thing we brought in (it still has to stay in the corner though). We blend together two different beers to make Troublesome. The first is a somewhat uninteresting wheat beer and the second is an overly acidic & funky beer fermented solely with lactobacillus. We blend the two beers together with coriander and salt at the tail end of fermentation to create a mild, lemony tartness and a fuller sensation of mouthfeel. And yes, it’s hard to make.

ABV:4.5%
HOPS:Northern Brewer
IBU:10
MALTS:Pils, Wheat Malt, Flaked Wheat, Flaked Oats

Closing out the beer tab, I am not a fan of wheat beers.  I love German Hefeweizen but not too many wheats.  I love Upland Brewing Wheat and this beer from Off Color.  I just realized both of these craft beers are not even in my market.  Now that is pretty funny.  I will have to do some road trips.  What I like about this Wheat Beer, you do not taste the wheat or yeast like most American wheat beers.  I love the coriander that is used in this brew.  It has a nice lemon notes that kick off through out the beer drinking experience.  There is not over the top aftertaste from the beer and lemon notes.  It is just right.  They do some brewery tours and I would check into that to get to know this brewery a little bit more.  I highly recommend this brew.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!

New Beer Blog Buckledown Brewery Belt And Suspenders American IPA

image

In this beer blog, we are going to review a craft brewery, which is Buckle down Brewery, that just opened in the southern part of Chicagoland market.  The beer is their Belt And Suspenders American IPA.  Buckledown Brewery opened in December of 2013.  Ike Orcutt and Sean Mahoney, who are owners, opened the brewery in Lyons, IL.  They brewery four different beer styles and in extremely small batches.  There is not much history on this young brewery but I am glad to see them open now to make some history.  Let us get into the brew.

It has a clear copper color with a constant white head.  The smell is earthy to floral like to this American IPA.  The taste is an orange with hints of citrus notes.  The aftertaste is orange.  It is pretty drinkable beer.

Here is a description from their website (www.buckledownbrewing.com):

Belt & Suspenders

American IPA

Loads of Crystal and Sterling hops lead the way in producing huge citrus and pine aromatics.  Hoppiness is supported with a clean, slightly biscuity malt backbone.

Twitter:  @BuckleDownBeer

In closing, this is a great place to have a beer.  I love the fact they do not service food at their brewery.  You are there to have and try their beers.  Their beers are a work of art and they put some thought behind each of these brews.    There is a nice malty backbone and it is well designed.  They are not piling hops to hide the faults like most craft breweries in the City of Chicago or around the country.  I love the hops that they are using in this brew.  It kicks off some citrus notes.  It is drinkable and it is really good.  You might be able to find this brew around the city but I would make a trip to the south side of Chicago to enjoy beer with Sean, Ike, and their staff. I highly recommend this beer and this brewery.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

Cheers!
