New Beer Blog Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Ballast Point Electric Ray IPL

In this special set of beer blogs, we are going to get into the first of twelve beers from Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp sampler pack.   You will notice a theme throughout these beers.  The name of the beers and beer styles is taken from the partner craft breweries.   The first one that I picked is partner Ballast Point Brewery.  It is Electric Ray IPL.  Ballast Point Brewery was founded in 1996 by Jack and Yuseff.  It came from a home brewing supply shop that they opened in 1992.  The themes of this brewery is coming from the sea, water, or ocean.  They brew several different beer styles but they are known for their IPA’s like most West Coast craft breweries.  Let us get into this IPL.

It has a clear light copper color with a constant white head.  The aroma has floral to grapefruit notes.  The taste has a light carbonation grapefruit notes with a dry grapefruit finish for the aftertaste.   It is pretty drinkable beer.

This nautically named India Pale Lager combines intense cirtusy, floral American hops with the clean, classic malt body of a blonde lager.

As ever, San Diego’s Ballast Point looked the sea for inspiration.  A play on the fish’s scientific name – Torpedo California – Electric Ray pays homage to our Hop Torpedo, the source of much of this beer’s big flavor.  Its massive grapefruit and floral notes deliver a high-voltage hit of hop flavor.

Ballast Point brought their homebrewing dreams to the big leagues and started brewing professionally, but they never forgot their roots. They still run a successful homebrewing supply shop in San Diego. A love for hops and the ocean inspire incredible brewed and distilled offerings, and their one-of-a-kind labels boast some beautiful, and sometimes gnarly-lookin’, fish.

Closing, it is kind of fitting the fact that there would be IPL in this pack.  IPL is a growing beer style in the world of IPA’s.  I love the fact they named it after Electric Ray because of Ballast Point (BP).  BP using fishes and everything in the water to name their beers.  I really love the packaging  and how it explains the back story of the partner brewery.  I love how it explains their thoughts on why they picked this beer style.  Of course, being a Hophead, I had to pick one of the India Pale Ale or Lager.  I love the aroma and the taste profile that this beer offer.  This is one of the best beers in this pack.  I realize this is the first one I had in this pack that I am doing a write up but when I am finish this review up.  I will already had about half of this pack.  I recommend you getting a pack if you can find one.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Bell’s Mallard’s Odyssey Imperial Dark Ale

In this special beer blog, we are going to get into the second beer of twelve in this Beer Camp sampler pack.   Sierra Nevada Brewery teams up with Bell’s Brewery out of Michigan.  It is their Maillard’s Odyssey Imperial Dark Ale.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on either one of their craft breweries, you know the history of this Midwest and West Coast craft brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know both of these breweries.  Let us get into Imperial Dark Ale.

It has a jet black color with a nice tan color head.  The aroma has a chocolate to coffee notes.  The taste has chocolate to coffee notes with a dry coca notes for the aftertaste.  It is scary drinkable beer.

This robust dark ale is layered with complex malt flavors of toffee, caramel, chocolate, coffee, and dark fruit.

Rich, dark, and roasty.  That was our shared vision, and Maillard’s Odyssey is exactly that, taking its name in part from the famed Maillard reaction-the “browning” of sugars and amino acids-that creates the wonderful caramelized toffee-like and roasted flavors so abundant in this beer.

Closing, I was pretty impressed with this beer in bottle and draft.  I had it at first on draft at Ashley’s in Westland, Michigan.  I am not a huge fan of Bell’s Brewery.  I love my dark ales and lagers.  There is a ton of notes going on in this brew.  It is pretty complex ale.  I love that because you are paying a nice penny to get this sampler pack and you are getting your money worth.  I would hope all these breweries look at this time to give something different to the craft beer drinker.  I believe that Sierra Nevada and Bell’s Brewery did just that for the craft drinker.  This is a great dark ale and I hope either brewery pick up the recipe to make it everyday beer or seasonal.  I love it.  I highly recommend this beer.  I hope you can find it on draft or this sampler pack.  Good Luck!  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Beer Blog Sierra Nevada Beer Camp West Coast Double IPA

In this beer blog, we are going to get into West Coast Double IPA from Sierra Nevada Brewery.  This is a beer they made to kick off Beer Camp.  If you read my earlier beer blog posts on their beers, you know history of Sierra Nevada Brewery.  If you have not, please, read them to get to know this West Coast Craft Brewery.  Let us get into this Double IPA.

It has a clear slightly dark golden color with a white constant head.  The aroma is citrus to orange notes.  The taste has a nice light carbonation citrus notes with a dry hop bitter aftertaste.  It is pretty drinkable for a Double IPA.

Heading to most states in limited quantities, the Beer Camp Across America West Coast Double IPA clocks in at 8.5% ABV and features five hop varieties, two of which went into Sierra Nevada’s “Hop Torpedo” dry-hopping device and impart hints of grapefruit and a floral note that recalls orange blossom. A light malt body and dry finish complement the bold hop profile.

In the end, this was a great beer and it is a perfect beer to kick off beer camp.  I was pretty happy to get a Beer Camp 12pk.  I wish they would have made more because some of the liquor stores are over charging.  I am still happy that I have at least one.  I am pretty big fan of their Extra IPA.  They took that one and they hop it up.  I love the aroma to the color of the beer.  I love the packaging.  I love the hops and the malt backbone is a perfect match.  I highly recommend this beer.  Go get some!  Drink it! Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/

New Blog Sierra Nevada Brewery Beer Camp 2012

In this blog, we are going to take a look at another set of beers from Sierra Nevada Brewery.   If you read my earlier blog, you know a little something about this brewery.  The set of beers is coming from a sampler pack called Beer Camp.  Here is the beers, which are Oatmeal Stout, Floral IPA, Imperial Red Ale, and Imperial Pilsner, that are being featured in this blog.  Let us get into the beers.

Sierra Nevada Brewery Imperial Pilsner

This beer has a clear golden color with a constant white head on this pilsner. It has a fresh air smell to it. The taste is a sweet carbonation with a crisp dry slight hoppy aftertaste. Sierra Nevada Imperial Pilsner is extremely drinkable and will get beer drinkers in trouble if they are not paying attention.  I recommend trying this beer.

Packing a big hop-forward punch and bright crisp finish, this golden pilsner features a hearty dose of “sticky,” resinous Crystal and Pacifica dry hops, which balance the light-bodied yet complex malt backbone.

Sierra Nevada Brewery Imperial Red Ale

The red ale in the glass is a dark amber color with somewhat of a white head on it. It has a sweet raisins smell to it. The taste is of a sweet carbonation malty with a weird aftertaste. I cannot really decide it to you. It is drinkable until that aftertaste.

This Imperial Red Ale takes the intense hop profile found in a traditional double IPA and turns up the malt.  It has big aromatic hop notes of grapefruit, peach, and melon-balanced by a smooth and surprisingly robust malt body.

Sierra Nevada Brewery Floral IPA

This beer has a copper cloudy color with a constant white head on it. The smell of flowers is what this India Pale Ale has going on with it. The taste is of a citrus to piney with a dry hoppy aftertaste to it. It is drinkable India Pale Ale.

This unique take on the traditional IPA style pairs the bold and intense aromas of wholel-cone hop “flowers” with aromatic natural rose hips and petals for complex aromas and unexpected flavors.

Sierra Nevada Brewery Oatmeal Stout

It is black in color without a head on this stout. It has a chocolate to toffee smell to this Sierra Nevada Oatmeal Stout. The taste is burn malt to milky chocolate notes to the beer. It is extremely drinkable and will be troublesome to most beer drinkers.

This big oatmeal stout is midnight black in color-with a big, roasty, mocha-like aroma.  It has a silky body from the use of rolled oats, and a round and lasting finish.  Perfect as an after dinner treat.

In the end, this was a really good set of beers in this sampler pack with a great value.  There are a few higher end beers for $19.99 price point, which makes this a great value.  I love all the beers in this pack but the Imperial Red Ale.  I believe that is the weakest one of the four.  This is the order of the beers I like and it is Oatmeal Stout, Imperial Pilsner, Floral IPA, and Imperial Red Ale.  I did blend the Imperial Red Ale and the Floral IPA into one glass.  It was pretty good.  I highly recommend you trying Beer Camp.  Go get some!  Drink it!  Enjoy it!  Metal it!  \m/
